Board Games in Review – Smash Up – Monster Smash

Smash Up expansion Greetings Nerdarchists.

Nerdarchist Ted here and we get to continue the lovely series of board games in review.  We continue with Smash Up and its next expansion: Monster Smash.  The theme of each expansion continues with 4 new factions to test your fortitude.

Obviously with a name like Monster Smash, this expansion to Smash Up is all about the Monsters, and I guess the Monster makers.

So lets meet the monsters in Smash Up

Board Games in Review – Smash up Expansion – Obligatory Cthulhu Set

board game reviewGreeting Nerdarchist and board game enthusiasts. In continuing with my series on the wonderful game Smash Up I bring to you the 2nd expansion – The Obligatory Cthulhu Set.

Sticking with the same design with the first expansion the Obligatory Cthulhu Set brings you four new factions to add to the others.  Since every genre of role playing games has incorporated one version of Cthulhu and you get the Deep ones in books, movies board games and every where else they decided why not get this one out of the way early.

The four new factions and some helpful hints for them are as follows:

Board Games in Review – Smash up Expansion – Awesome Level 9000

smash upGreetings my fellow Nerdarchists. Nerdarchist Ted here and we are doing part 2 of the Smash Up review.  If you missed the first Smash Up review get it here.  With the first expansion of Awesome Level 9000 you get four new decks to add to your collection.

So let us first look at the name.  Awesome Level 9000 you get several nerdy references right from the start.  Awesome – we all know nerds are awesome and people use this term all the time.  But the bigger reference is the Level 9000 which would come from Dragon Ball Z when they used the silly power meter and Goku raised his “power level” to Over 9000.

The four new factions and some helpful hints for them are as follows:

Board Games in Review – Smash Up – Killer Combiner Card Game

smash upHello fellow Nerdarchists out there.  Nerdarchist Ted here and today I want to talk more about some board games or card game in this instance.  Particularly Smash Up, published by AEG.  The basic premise of the game is universal domination,  and who does not want that?

I have been playing this game for quite a while and just love it.  My fellow Nerdarchist do as well.  And who does not want to play a game that has a T-rex with mounted lasers?

The galaxy or universe is at war and no single faction has made enough progress by themselves to be able to say they are winning.  So what is there to do?  Lets team up.

Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Customized Races — Subraces of the Underdark

Hey Nerdarchists out there,  it is time for yet another installment of customized 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons races. We have a request from Nerdarchist Ashton Smyth who is running an Underdark campaign and wanted my take on the duergar. Thanks for the great suggestion I hope you like it and agree with my take on it. And since I am doing the dark dwarves why not add the deep gnomes as well? I have included the full race write up so you can use this as an easy reference for creating your own duergar or svirfneblin character. Some changes needed to be made to the base races for thematic or mechanical purposes.

The Wemic — Monster and Playable Race for 5E D&D

Hello fellow Nerdarchists, today I want to bring you one of my favorite races from Dungeons & Dragons past — the wemic. I fell in love with the wemic back in my early days of playing second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. When I got my hands on the Complete Book of Humanoids I played many of those races and wemic was absolutely my favorite. You have to admit the wemic is a realy cool race. So I am proud to give you my take on the wemic both as a monster and a playable race.

Dungeons and Dragons — Gaming Through the Editions

Hello. Nerdarchist Ted here and today I am just going to go through the editions of Dungeons & Dragons I have played and my opinions on them. I have been tabletop roleplaying for over two decades and I started with second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Some of the people who have been on Nerdarchy have a longer history and started earlier than I did. I have the red box that Nerdarchist Dave started with.

Rune Stones and Rune Port Transportation in Tabletop Roleplaying Games

Hello Nerdarchy fans. Today I want to talk about a potential house rule you can add to your tabletop roleplaying game like fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons — rune port transportation. Many of you have played video games that used way points or some form of magic portal allowing easy travel and access to other areas of your realm. Essentially that is what we’re exploring. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept this would be a sigil or glyph created on the ground imbued with magic allowing one to magically travel to another such location.

Getting into Character for Tabletop Roleplaying

Hello Nerdarchy friends and fans! Nerdarchist Ted here. Today we are going to step back and lift the veil from the gaming world and talk about the mindset. I have been tabletop roleplaying for well over two decades. In this time I have played countless characters both as a Dungeon Master and as a player character. Whether you wing it every session or you have a detailed process, you might want some tips so here are some ideas to help you out.

Custom 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons Races — Reptilians

Hello gaming fans, Nerdarchist Ted here. I know Nerdarchist Nubz has been doing a series called Savage Species and many of you have liked it.  So I have decided to give it a go and give you a couple of my favorites written from my point of view. Let me let you in on a little secret. I am a huge fan of playing  monster characters. For you old hats out there my favorite book from second edition Dungeons & Dragons was clearly the Complete Book of Humanoids. Once I got a hold of that I saw no reason to play any other race unless the Dungeon Master forced me to. All right, with my background covered lets get to the fun with my take on some 5E D&D monster races! Please consult with your DM ahead of time before you make a character with these rules.

Nerdarchy Presents Master Dungeon Tile Crafter Dungeon Master G info

gamingHello Nerdarchy Fans, Nerdarchist Ted here and today we are going to examine dungeon delving in a new way.  Do you use dungeon tiles or a grid in your campaign or do you do more of a free form combat?

Before Nerdarchy used a grid and miniatures we used a rough drawing on paper and d6s for bad guys and d4s for our heroes.    We even occasionally used ketchup packets or kit kat bars as barriers to segment rooms or corridors.  Quite ridiculous, if you ask me.  I am thankful that those times were not caught on film.

This evolved the longer we played and while we occasionally use dungeon tiles or some cool scenery we have not fully embraced a true 3 dimensional gaming world.

Game Master Tips — Making and Using NPCs

Hello tabletop roleplaying game fans welcome to Nerdarchy. Nerdarchist Ted here and today we are going to talk about your nonplayer characters, or NPCs. These are your staples as a Game Master. Every single monster and person that is not controlled by a player is an NPC and it is up to you as GM to breathe life into them. When planning an NPC you need to keep several factors in mind.
