Forging Runes — 5E D&D Magic Item

customized magic itemsNerdarchist Ted here and thanks for checking this article out.  I am  going to go a little more in depth on the customized magic item that I presented to Daves character Uthen-Gar in my Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition game.

Customized magic items in 5th edition

Magic items are a large part of Dungeons and Dragons and it is important to have items that not only add a benefit to characters but have ones in your game that enrich the players, but your world as well.

When I created ‘Rune,’ a tiny elemental it was to have a role playing tool in the party that I controlled but to give Dave’s character a mechanical benefit.  He is playing a dwarven fighter wizard and thus will need coin for armor as well as magical research.  By giving him an item that reduces his cost I have lessened that burden of his character choice.

Forging Bastion — 5E D&D Magic Item

customized magic itemNerdarchist Ted here and I am hear to expand on our video series Mage Forge making customized magic items for 5th edition.  Today we delve more into the magic item we created for Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition; Bastion the Pact of the Ogre Magi.

Alex Maxwell gave us the inspiration for reskinning a magic item and making it something unique and interesting.  I feel that making new customized magic items makes the party more excited because it is not something out of the book and it enriches the world because someone had to have made it.

Rise of the Mongrelfolk in Chimes of Discordia for 5E D&D

Dungeons and DragonsHello loyal Nerdarchist and readers.  Nerdarchist Ted here and today I want to do something a little bit different.  Last week I brought you an article talking about how to use the Mongrelfolk in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.  So today I want to talk about how they came to be in our home brew: Chimes of Discordia.

Far to the south of our lovely town of Griphongaff lies a swamp.  A place teeming with life of all sort.  Though everything living there needs to be hearty as it is a rough place to live.  Many dangerous creatures call this place home.

5E D&D Fighter Archetype — Weapon Master

Weapon Master

Nerdarchist Ted here and today I am breaking the mold. Normally I do a board game review on Mondays and instead today I am going to give you a Customized Archetype for your fighter for Dungeons and Dragons 5th ed.

New Archetype for fighter in Dungeons and Dragons

The fighter presented in thePlayers Handbook is an all around fighter, able to pick up any weapon and excel almost equally with it.   The Weapon Master is the opposite.  They have toiled long hours in hard disciplined practice to truly master a weapon of choice.

As this is an archetype the rest of the fighters skills apply to anything the fighter chooses to wield but the remainder of the benefits only work when they are wielding the weapon of choice.

Mogrelfolk Playable Race for 5E D&D

Customized racesHey Nerdarchists out there, Nerdarchist Ted here and it is time for yet another installment of customized races for D&D 5th edition.   Today I wanted to bring you the Mongrelfolk.  Nerdarchy received a request for us to talk about this and I never would have guessed how pumped it would make me want to play one.

In D and D mongrelfolk are a race of creatures you would never take for a race.  Through generations of cross breeding you have outcasts that look nothing like anything else, even each other.  Potentially possessing horns, tails, talons or anything else from wild creatures, Mogrelfolk are asymmetrical.  They are hardy folk living in the wilds since most civilized people are unwilling to take in the freaks.

Customized Races – The Saurials| Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition

Dungeons and dragonsHey Nerdarchists out there, Nerdarchist Ted here and it is time for yet another installment of customized races for D&D 5th edition. Saurials, humanoid Dinosaurs brought to you by the Finders stone trilogy.  It was an amazing read all those years ago.  But after reading it plagued the question, well how do I play a humanoid dinosaur in my game.

Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition

I will level with you.  I love playing unique races in Dungeons and Dragons and I have loved dinosaurs since I was a kid.  When I was in fourth grade I got the illustrated dinosaur dictionary and I have read through it many times.  Now as scientists uncover more facts about dinosaurs and change in some or many ways the way they are viewed the coolness factor of them have not changed.

Grimlock as a Playable Race for 5E D&D

GrimlockHey Nerdarchists out there, Nerdarchist Ted here and it is time for yet another installment of customized races for D&D 5th edition.  Inspired by the name alone can make one remember the quote, “Grimlock strongest of the  . . .”  If you remember that, I hope I made you chuckle.

Grimlocks are descended from humans but being worshipers of evil for so long and living underground has caused them to change.  They no longer posses the ability to see adapting their senses to just know what is around them instead of actually trying to see it.

5E D&D Character Build — Scout Tracker

Dungeons and DragonsNerdarchist Ted here and I am going to share a cool character build for a character I have recently made for a Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition game. I was asked to play in a game online and it was restricted to humans and no wizards, warlocks, or sorcerers were going to be allowed.

Magic was divine in this world. It was full of wilderness so I though maybe having a woodsman around would be a good thing.  Now in D&D anytime Human is mentioned I am always thinking what feat is going to best serve this character.

5E D&D Character Build — Sorcerer Warlock

I am going to share a cool character build for a character I have played recently in a fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons game. I was entering a game that had been going on for a while so I was told to make an 11th level character. When doing a character build all the pieces of the puzzle are important. In my past I have played a lot of strong melee characters but the new edition of D&D offers so many cool powers I wanted to play a spellcaster. I’m Not saying there is not a draw to do a character build for a melee character — there is — but I felt a diversion is necessary. So with this spellcaster, as with any character build, you need all the pieces: race, background and class. I typically like to have these decided for the most part before I focus on stats, but at least race and class before I do stats always. This makes sure I can place my stats as effectively as I can, even if it is not an optimized race and class combination. For this one I certainly veered off the beaten path. I made a multiclass warforged sorcerer/warlock. Getting a bonus to Strength and Constitution does not make for a Charisma focused character, so if you want to use the concept and change the race to a tielfling, half-elf or aasimar I am not going to be able to stop you. On the other hand I like to try interesting character builds based on what I think would make a cool concept rather than focusing entirely on mechanics. So let’s get in my head on these choices. With the Eberron PDF recently released by WotC people are jumping at the chance to try out the new material. I am not immune to this hype or craze so I jumped in head first.

Smash Up is a Killer Combiner Card Game

smash upHello fellow Nerdarchists out there.  Nerdarchist Ted here and today I want to talk more about some board games or card game in this instance.  Particularly Smash Up, published by AEG.  The basic premise of the game is universal domination,  and who does not want that?

I have been playing this game for quite a while and just love it.  My fellow Nerdarchist do as well.  And who does not want to play a game that has a T-rex with mounted lasers?

The galaxy or universe is at war and no single faction has made enough progress by themselves to be able to say they are winning.  So what is there to do?  Lets team up.

5E D&D duergar svirfneblin dark dwarves deep gnomes

5E D&D Customized Races — Subraces of the Underdark

Hey Nerdarchists out there,  it is time for yet another installment of customized 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons races. We have a request from Nerdarchist Ashton Smyth who is running an Underdark campaign and wanted my take on the duergar. Thanks for the great suggestion I hope you like it and agree with my take on it. And since I am doing the dark dwarves why not add the deep gnomes as well? I have included the full race write up so you can use this as an easy reference for creating your own duergar or svirfneblin character. Some changes needed to be made to the base races for thematic or mechanical purposes.

Wemic — Monster and Playable Race for 5E D&D

Hello fellow Nerdarchists, today I want to bring you one of my favorite races from Dungeons & Dragons past — the wemic. I fell in love with the wemic back in my early days of playing second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. When I got my hands on the Complete Book of Humanoids I played many of those races and wemic was absolutely my favorite. You have to admit the wemic is a realy cool race. So I am proud to give you my take on the wemic both as a monster and a playable race.

Gaming Through the Editions of D&D

Hello. Nerdarchist Ted here and today I am just going to go through the editions of Dungeons & Dragons I have played and my opinions on them. I have been tabletop roleplaying for over two decades and I started with second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Some of the people who have been on Nerdarchy have a longer history and started earlier than I did. I have the red box that Nerdarchist Dave started with.

Rune stones

Rune Stones and Rune Transportation in Tabletop RPGs

Hello Nerdarchy fans. Today I want to talk about a potential house rule you can add to your tabletop roleplaying game like fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons — rune port transportation. Many of you have played video games that used way points or some form of magic portal allowing easy travel and access to other areas of your realm. Essentially that is what we’re exploring. For those of you unfamiliar with the concept this would be a sigil or glyph created on the ground imbued with magic allowing one to magically travel to another such location.
