Nerd Craft: Miniature Crafting a Throne & Crown

doll furniture, throne, small scale throne, doll throne

Throne and an example of wooden trim used to make decorative elements.

Hey Nerdarchists, I’m still working the next dimensional illustration (sadly this weekend was jam-packed with shooting videos and gaming- I know, you weep for me right?), but I figured I spend the time to show-off some of the miniature crafting I did for the last shoot in a lil segment I’d like to call “Nerd Craft“.  The main set pieces were a throne and a crown worn by the king figure.

Svirfneblin Bard – D&D Character build 5th edition – Outkast

character buildGreetings Nerdarchists.  Nerdarchy is looking to launch another game into our schedule.  If you missed our session zero feel free to watch the video below.  My character build for that Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition  game is a deep gnome bard.

Now bards in previous editions really did not appeal to me.  I think before 5th edition I had only played one bard in approximately 20 years of playing Dungeons and Dragons.  5th edition on the other hand really changed my mind.  I have played in less than 10 campaigns in the year since the release of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition and 2 of those characters have been bards.  So what does that say about them?

Dungeons and Dragons character build

So with this character build for 5th edition, my goal was to make a well rounded character.  He has a few things that he would be good at, excel at really because of expertise but be a support character all around. As this race class combination is a sub-optimal character build it fits.

Mad Max Fury Road & The Dark Fantasy Art Influences of Brom

Brom's

So I may lose nerd cred here, but I was only just able to see the fantastic, nitrous injected film that was Mad Max Fury Road this past weekend.  I don’t feel I can add much to the discussion of the cultural significance of the film, but there is one unique slant regarding the visuals that I might offer.

Fury Road explodes like an oil tanker flame-throwered and jack-knifed into the desert wastes at 60 mph with rich, detailed costumes, weapons, and vehicles- I was simply floored by how visually extravagant this film was!  The many muted tones of the film giving the few instances of vibrant color an incredible punch!

It was full of dark fantasy imagery coupled with something else- maybe call it a “Rust Punk” aesthetic with all of it’s super-charged, lethal, heap of junk vehicles.  For those less well-versed in dark fantasy imagery, it tends to have a more threatening and fetishized look about it.  The first name that comes to mind when I think “dark fantasy” is:  Gerald Brom, or to many, just simply Brom.

Otherworldly Patron – Custom Warlock – Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition

dungeons and dragonsNerdarchy did a video talking about warlocks and we did a video talking about dragon familiars.  On that second video we talked about the possibility of a Warlock choosing a Dragon as their otherworldly Patron.

In order to go into detail on this you have to examine what the warlock is in 5th edition.  The warlock is a being being imbued with magical power from another source. The power extended to the warlock comes with some unwritten price that the player and the dungeon master can work out or through before and during game play.

D&Dized – Avengers – What Would the Avengers Look Like in 5th Edition

5th editionHello and Welcome to Nerdarchy.  I am Nerdarchist Ted and today I am going to give you the ability to play your favorite Avengers in your game of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.

We started a new series where we take a popular fictional character and see what we think his levels would need to be in order to play and feel like the character you see in the comics and movies.

For this series we are fully going to the Epic levels which we have no rules for beyond boons.  So we wan to give them the class features of Dungeons and Dragons we see used on a regular basis.

Path of the Primal – Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Custom path for Barbarian

Custom pathNerdarchist Ted here and last week I brought you an article talking about the circle of the swarm druid.  I did this because Dungeons and Dragons has lots of archetype options for other classes but Druid and Barbarian seem to get the short end of the stick.

So I took care of Druid last week so now I will take care of Barbarian, or at least give you another option for your barbarian character in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.

Primal barbarian for 5th edition

The primal barbarian is a weapon unto itself.  They rarely need the trappings of civilization to survive.  They thrive in the wilderness.  They are one with it and at the same time feel that they are above it and in some ways rule it.

Fantasy Dimensional Illustrations by Ryan Friant

Hello my fellow Nerdarchists, Ryan here.  Many of my contributions have been seen on Nerdarchy more than read.  I’ve been doing the “How’s to Speeks Goblin” comic strip for the last year, but I’ve decided to change directions and do something completely different for the website- dimensional illustration!  If you’re wondering what the heck that even means, I’ll explain it later- promise!

Raised on Fantasy Art

Genre art, specifically fantasy art has always been a huge passion for me.  I grew-up on Jim Henson, specifically loving his collaborations with Brian Froud to create films such as Labryinth and the Dark Crystal.  Later on I got really into the art of Tony Diterlizzi, who’s art you might recognize from the Planescape box set of the 90’s and other Dungeons & Dragons products, Magic the Gathering cards, and his fantastic children’s books- there are countless other book cover, children’s book and RPG interior artists who’s work I enjoy.  Later I would come to also really love the work of Arthur Rackham (a fun bit of lore about Mr. Rackham is that his grandfather was the infamous pirate Calico Jack Rackham) and Rednose Studio.  If you’re not familiar with any of these great fantasy artists, do yourself a favor and Google their work.  There are many, many other artist’s whose work I admire, but when I think about the artists that most directly influences my art, that’s about my pantheon right there.

Circle of the Swarm – Dungeons and Dragons Custom circle for Druid in 5th Edition

Dungeons and DragonsHello fellow gamers, Nerds or nerdarchists.  However you deem to call yourself it is I, Nerdarchist Ted here and today I bring you some more class options for Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.

With all the free play test information that WOTC is putting out they are neglecting one of the coolest classes: Druids.  Druids throughout history have been wild and mysterious.  They have always been powerful in Dungeons and Dragons, and 5th edition is no exception.  While some of the cool abilities in 3rd have been neutered they still have a lot of power at their disposal.

But one thing they  lack is choice.  Most classes in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition have 3 or more options to choose from when they have to pick an archetype, path, school or what have you.  But the druid only gets 2 choices.  The Sorcerer only has 2 as well but with the Unearthed Arcanna they have released 2 other choices:  Favored soul and Storm borne.

Playing RPGs with New Gamers

game master tips role playing gamesGreetings Nerdarchist Ted here and if you are a regular visitor to our site you will know that today should be a Goblin comic.  But Nerdarchist Ryan celebrated Star Wars day with a great comic so we actually launched that one on Monday.

So that shifted my usual articles back a day.  So here we are with me on a Wednesday.

New players at your role playing game offer an assortment of challenges as well as an assortment of boon.  Now sadly I am not talking about Epic boons bestowed upon you when you reach 20th level but they are advantages never the less.

Bullywug Playable Race for 5E D&D

customized raceNerdarchsit Ted here and today we get to hop into a new customized race in tribute to the game run at Philly Games con by Nerdarchist Ryan.  His game went over so well that people wanted to know how to use a Bullywug as a playable race in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.

Bullywug – customized race in Dungeons and Dragons

Bullywugs have a rich culture presented in the Monster Manual.  They will grovel and debase themselves in the presence of their superiors and will use cunning and murder to try and climb up the political ladder of their community.
