Flames of Enchantment Erupt from the Mage Forge!

D&D Ideas -- We All Live On A Boat
Dissecting the 5E D&D Giant Creature Type

So many memorable moments from our fantasy roleplaying game experiences originate through the amazing magical items our characters possess. Drawing your sword accompanied by the roar of a dragon to signify the blade as a relic of an ancient order and your wielding it proving your right to carry on the legacy. Plumbing the depths of eldritch knowledge through your ring’s cursed connection to an unfathomable entity plumbing the depths of your soul in trade. Capturing the souls of dying creatures in your lantern to draw on their essence for aid in your darkest moments. These are the kinds of moments we adventure for as fantasy RPG players. And as creators we’re throwing open the doors to our magic item vault in Mage Forge — Magic Items for 5th Edition!

Make magical memories in your RPGs

Nerdarchy launched our second Kickstarter campaign on Jan. 4, 2022. Mage Forge is a Deluxe Box Set of 250 Tarot Sized Magic Item Cards for the world’s greatest roleplaying game. So many of our favorite memories from RPG experiences involve the incredible magic items our characters carry and we aim to share these same amazing moments with you.

In the case of a great many of the items in the set we already have too! We’ve been running monthly one shots with folks drawn from the Nerdarchy community for years and lots of these magic items indeed made for moments we remember fondly. It’s as rewarding and fun to give out these magic items to adventurers as it is for those characters to uncover and use them in their journeys. In addition to those items we searched through all our own personal sources like private games with friends and added those too. Plus there’s all the magic items we created for special events over the years like D&D In A Castle, convention games and live streamed sessions. And to top it all off we crafted a number of special new magic items exclusively for this collection.

One of our favorite components of any game material official or otherwise is the evocative factor. A great magic item provides inspiration for Game Masters and players to fuel the best kinds of adventures. With a curated selection of 250 unique magic items we’re certain you’ll discover lots of new favorites for your characters to seek as part of their personal goals, impactful items for the whole party to quest after and magic items perfectly suited for the threads and narrative hooks you sprinkle into games as a GM.

Mage Forge magic items include some nifty details too. There’s a variety of paired items that only count as a single item when it comes to attunement, items that increase in power when attuned along with other items, two new kinds of consumable magic items and more. We made sure to spread the rarity around too and you’ll find everything from quirky common magic items to incredibly powerful artifacts. A number of magic items reference a new school of magic we created also but don’t worry — we’re including these Beardomancy spells right along with all the magic items.

Developing this project took us a while but we’re happy for the extra time we spent for several reasons. The biggest reason is we wanted to make sure every backer from our first Kickstarter received all their items before we moved forward with another project. The last couple of years have been tumultuous and it was really important to us to ensure everyone from our first foray was taken care of satisfactorily. We also used the time to consider our approach with Mage Forge. It was really exciting to come up with lots of extra goodies and stretch goals the first time around and for our second one we’re taking a simpler approach — one collection of cards in one box.

Truth be told the whole team geeked out about the packaging when we explored our options. We considered doing things like five distinct decks or mixing and matching cards but once we saw the prototype for a single box with slots for two thick stacks of cards we were like yes, that’s the one! Because of this we’re also able to produce a booklet insert for GMs with exclusive details about many of the magic items in the set like their history, expanded lore, adventure hooks and secrets they hold…

We’re inviting you to make your games more magical along with us by checking out Mage Forge. These magic items enhanced our own game experiences and inspired tons of adventures over the years. We’re going at this project hammer and tongs so you can do the same. Check out Mage Forge — Magic Items for 5th Edition and discover how magical your adventures can become right here.
