D&D Ideas: Gifts

D&D Ideas -- Travel
D&D Ideas: Sports

Welcome once again to the weekly newsletter. This week’s topic is gifts, you can see the weekly live chat over on the YouTubes. We hang out every Monday evening at 8 p.m. EST at Nerdarchy the YouTube channel and talk about D&D, RPGs, gaming, life and whatever nerdy stuff comes up.

Spotlight

This week’s spotlight is for Nord Games. We did a discussion with the owner Chris Haskins on random character generation, their Kickstarter, and the Open Gaming License. Check out the chat here.

Delving Dave’s Dungeon

In this week’s weekly live chat the topic was gifts. There are so many ways for Game Masters and Dungeon Masters to use gifts in their games. Even WotC incorporated gifts into Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. Even if they are dark gifts.

My favorite way of granting magic items in my D&D games is by having them gifted to the characters they are meant for. Alternatively I like having magic either bestowed on the characters or their gear.

Magical boons and items are just the tip of the iceberg though for gifts in your D&D games. Feats, titles, henchmen, and mounts are all fair game for gifts to bestow upon your players. I’ve even given a second background to a player before. It’s not just about giving stuff to your players though.

For these benefits to be gifts there must be a gift giver. This creates an opportunity to get your players to buy in even deeper into your campaign world and the npc that granted the gift.

That’s all from the DM’s side of the GM Screen. The players can give gifts in game to each. The players can also give gifts to npcs. All of these have happened at our table. Many of which have led to fantastic role playing opportunities in our games.

From Ted’s Head

Gifts are wonderful things no matter how you look at them. If you give them you get to spread joy. If you receive them you get to receive that joy. I apologize but I have a lot to talk about from several different perspectives on this topic. Dave and I go into some depth about gifts in the game during the live chat so I will not labor long on that point, just know that it can be a fun way to add features or magic items into your game.

One gift I am throwing out there, to those willing, Dave and I still have spots at our table for D&D in a Castle this July. Previously I had said that my table was sold out, but one player had a conflict of schedule and that means the opportunity opens up for you. D&D in a Castle is a fantastic experience and both Dave and I are looking to tailor our games to what the players are looking for, but we have plenty of great Ideas in motion.

I received a gift for the recent holidays and I thought given its proximity to D&D I thought it worth sharing. Monsters and Mythical Creatures from around the world is full of mythical creatures and cryptids that have been claimed to exist throughout the ages. A bunch of them already exist in D&D but many of them are something I have never heard before. Each entry is short and many have pictures so that you can show off what the being looks like as you terrorize your players. If you want to grab a copy of this book on Amazon and help the channel you can grab a copy: Here My little gift will be periodically throughout the year I will be making stat blocks for some of the ones that inspire me so be on the lookout for those blog entries on nerdarchy.com

Yearly traditions are fun. Be it giving Birthday gifts or holiday year end gifts it is a nice little thing. But with the stress of life, I will throw out that at times it is important to take care of yourself and a gift to yourself is not a bad thing. While it is not D&D or even RPG advice I feel that over the years that we are a Nerdarchy family and I care about all our fans so I just felt it was necessary to make sure that you, the one reading this, are taking care of yourself. Stealing a phrase from my friend over at MTD – You Matter. So just remember that!
