Kickstarter Korner for July 2018, Week 1

Powerful Potions and Mutated Trolls Await Within Wyestone Horror
Buff is the Stuff for D&D Support Characters

Each week during the Quests & Adventures live chat, Saturday at 2 p.m. eastern, Nerdarchists Dave and Ted and Nate the Nerdarch hang out live with fans from the Nerdarchy YouTube channel. It’s a chance to share announcements and news, answer questions from the live chat and generally just hang out and talk nerdy with the Nerdarchy community.

In the description of each weekly video, Nerdarchist Ted compiles a list and links to all the videos and website content from the week. But he also shares a selection of cool Kickstarter campaigns. As an avid Kickstarter supporter, he’s happy to share his favorite RPG and gaming-related Kickstarters with you, the Nerdarchy community. Enjoy!

Protip: Lean into it. Instead of considering “what if’s” focus on what is. In the first game I played with Nerdarchist Ted as the Dungeon Master, my character was a 10-th level githzerai Shadow sorcerer with 8 Constitution and 32 hit points. The question of the adventure was Can You Survive a Trip into the Deep Feywild? The assumption was my character would answer in the negative. It was a one-shot, and I never played a higher level sorcerer before, and a really cool piece of art from Tome of Beasts of a frail, sorta desiccated guy left me with CON as a dump stat. Zunizira has a powerful mind! The body is inconsequential. Fellow players and live viewers alike — and the DM — expressed doubt for his survival. But I was determined to enjoy exploring the character while he lasted. By the time a character is 10th level, they’ve experienced a lot. The quests they undertake are equally important and dangerous too. If a character does not survive, I imagine they still lived a life much more interesting than the average commoner from any plane. (Even a ghetto on the border of Limbo and the Shadowfell).

When we optimize our characters for maximum enjoyment, it can take many forms. I tend to consider adventuring in any game or setting a widely understood and accepted high risk-high reward endeavor. So for me this squishy shadow sorcerer was an opportunity to see the D&D world through the eyes of an individual keenly aware of his poor health but determined to press onward, mind over body (literally!). In that regard, a highly optimized character. The point is, instead of worrying about what if this extremely low-health character didn’t, indeed, survive a trip into the deep Feywild I leaned into my curiosity over what is the experience for myself and the other players.

Whether you’re playing a new D&D character or wondering if you should take that step and run your own games, or any new experience at or away from the gaming table, lean into it. You’ll fail sometimes. The character will die, the session will stink, those cupcakes don’t look anything like the ones on Pinterest. Whatever. The failures are just as important and instructive as the successes. Life is a rapid-fire series of what is, and the what if’s never come.
