RPG Crate Unboxing — June 2018

Hello adventurer. It is that time again when we ask, “Whats in the box?” June’s RPG Crate subscription box just arrived and as I peek inside the theme is Wondrous Power. We are hopefully all familiar with figurines of wondrous power so I wonder (get it? Wonder…wondrous…yeah it is a pun) if it has anything to do with the theme. Unboxing is the only way to find out for sure.

From the RPG Crate June 2018 insert:

“Dangerous storms unleash hail and powerful winds on the Three River Region, and an ancient druid speaks of curses.  A group of adventurers are suspected lost in the ruins, possibly fallen to the curse, and the townsfolk are worried it will never end.”

T-shirt

The first item as usual is the exclusive T-shirt. “There is wondrous power in the scope and breath of imagination and an adventurous spirit.” I marvel at the awesome shirts RPG Crate creates each month and that they can include them in with all the awesome stuff each month. I swear the person behind it all must have a warlock pact with a T-shirt company. However they make it happen I am glad they can. The design as always is awesome and some of the shirts I got from RPG Crate are among my favorites.

Figurines of Power

Next we have the Figurines of Power by Savage Creations. “And together we shall smile at the beauty of destruction.” Inside the big box is a small black box which wound up being heavier than it looked. When I opened it up I saw 4 beautifully carved creatures. You get a lion, an elephant, a dragonfly and an eagle. These can easily be fielded on the table as minis as they all are about medium size and you could literally give the figures as treasure in a game. When the player summons it, the statue goes from fitting in their hand to the same size as them as you place the carved rock onto the battle mat. I am certain this is what RPG Crate intended with them. The figures are nicely sculpted and detailed. It is a nice touch to do something different but still be useful at the table. Well done.

Recipes for Adventure

Recipes for Adventure is next up on the chopping block, so to speak. “Nothing is better, after a long day running for your life from a lion pride, than sitting down at your own campfire.” These recipes are cool each month and we have been getting on average one in each crate for a while but in this one we get four. Each card gives you a real world recipe with a fantasy ingredient, but what you should use in real life as well. I look at these cards as a cool way to spice (yeah another pun and this was intended as well) up your gaming table. The fancy thing about them is there is a small adventure, or encounter, on the other side so you can go in game to get the fantasy ingredient. These cards link up to the 4 figurines: Lion Steak Kebabs, Dragonfly Stir-fry, Elephant Ears, and Devilish Eggs.

Mapping Booklet

RPG Crate loves the open road and now the Open Road presents a Mapping Booklet. This book is made by RPG Crate and is designed to be opened up. Remove the staples and you have eleven 11×17 double-sided hex maps you can color and create your world at your leisure. If that were not enough a packet of 6 colored pencils are included in the crate to help you get started. These again are something you can work on and literally hand out to your players. Hopefully if you put the time in to make a map they will not lose it on you. That would be sad.

Adventures on the Open Road

“The risen are the answer to life, death, and the passing of time.” The last thing in the box is the Adventurers on The Open Road. Each month on heavy card stock a three part adventure is written. The Game Master running the material can start from any card using only what part of the adventure they care to. Each one gives ways to get into the action quickly with how it begins as well as ending with what happens next. Each card typically has its own map and unique monsters created for the included adventure.

Having run many of the cards included I feel the adventures are well written and enjoyable to play. The one for this month is designed for 4 adventures averaging 12 levels. The more resting as a GM you allow the easier they become. If you run them as written without skipping any of the encounters, as I typically do to save time, you are looking at roughly six hours of game play from all the cards. Nerdarchy, usually myself, runs these on the YouTube channel  the fourth Friday of the month, albeit a condensed version of it. I usually bypass one card and shorten the other two. They have been a lot of fun.
