Nerdarchy on Are These D&D Dragons in the Real World
In this 14-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted explore a real world animal and ask: Is this a Dungeons & Dragons dragon? The volcano snail might be the world’s closest creature to a D&D dragon.
The conversation begins with Dave and Ted taking a closer look at the scaly-foot gastropod — a creature from our own real world more commonly known as a volcano snail — and imagining it within the context of D&D. They begin by discussing the traits of volcano snails. These include living in the deepest parts of underwater volcanic vents and boasting a shell made of iron to protect them from extreme heat conditions and also create a magnetic effect.
In the video Dave and Ted next ponder how a volcano snail might translate into an interesting D&D monster. When it comes to the creature’s type the weigh the differences between elemental and monstrosity, citing the flail snail as an example to support the latter. The volcano snail’s iron shell certain suggests a high armor class and provide a natural camouflage wherein an inert volcano snail appears as nothing more than a mineral deposit. It’s protuberances provide a piercing damage attack too. The most interesting trait is the volcano snail’s magnetic property and in the video they explore a few different ways to represent this.
What’s your take on the volcano snail? The initial concept for this video reimagined these strange animals as some sort of dragon.
