In this 9-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted explore feats in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons for the Battle Smith Artificer Specialist.

The conversation begins with Dave and Ted taking a look at the Battle Smith Artificer Specialist in general and considering how they operate. This particular artificer subclass incorporates one very special feature not present in other class options, which makes a Battle Smith very distinct. The Steel Defender companion adds a whole different dimension to these artificers. In addition to all the amazing stuff a Steel Defender can do the most important thing to note when it comes to choosing feats for your Battle Smith is this construct depends largely on the artificer’s bonus action.

Diving into the discussion Dave and Ted take a broad look at all the feat options available in 5E D&D and then go over their picks when it comes to synergy for an Battle Smith. How would you rank these feats? Is it better to shore up weaknesses and pain points or focus on strengths? Do you prefer passive features providing static benefits at all times or more active options?

The selection of feats begins with a tie between two very similar options, both of which provide additional magical options for an artificer. These are followed up with a feat to support the Battle Smith’s more mundane combat capabilities. The next two feats bolster a Battle Smith’s defenses since while they’re kind of tanky for a spellcaster, they’re still a spellcaster and therefore somewhat squishy. Rounding out the list is a tried and true feat almost impossible to pass on for any character who casts spells.

Have you played an artificer in your D&D games? Inside you’ll find new and different games for both characters and players to engage with, using their in-game skills and proficiencies for some and relying on the luck of the dice for others. Along with the games are establishments where characters can discover and play them.
