Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms is Free to Play Dungeons and Dragons in Early Access on Steam and it’s Awesome
Salutations, nerds! And good news for fans of idle games like Cookie Clicker and AdventureQuest Dragons. Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms is a Dungeons and Dragons game in early access on Steam right now, free to play, and I have to say it’s exactly what I needed.
It’s an idle game, and if you’re not already aware of what that means I’ll give you the run down: you don’t have to do a whole lot for the game to do what it does. You click a couple of times and get it started and then watch the numbers go up and get ridiculously high as the story progresses and in this case, as your heroes do more damage.

In this game in particular, your Dungeons and Dragons heroes kill monsters and earn gold and you can use that gold to level them up by clicking the green bar under their portrait. That’s all there is to it. The game keeps calculating your gold income even when you have it turned off so when you log in you’ve got a nice chunk of change to spend. That is, more or less, the definition of an idle game; it does what it does while you’re idle.
That’s not going to be everybody’s cup of tea, but I love it. Just go type “Idle Champions” into the search bar on Steam and it will come up. And if that hasn’t sold you on its own, Jarlaxle is in it. Yeah, I mean the drow in the pimp hat. Also Minsc and Boo, but you see where my priorities are right now.
One downside to it is that when you finish the adventure you’re set on, it resets itself at a higher difficulty and you don’t keep your numbers. However, you do keep the loot that you had at the outset and if it’s a repeat adventure you do get more gold than you did the first time around. Personally, I don’t think that’s all bad; it gives the game a little more longevity than a standard idle game would have because it isn’t just a snowball, it’s a snowball that keeps getting placed at the top of the hill to roll down it again.
Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms includes renowned characters from Forgotten Realms lore like Bruenor Battlehammer, Jarlaxle, Minsc and Boo, new characters from Force Grey like Calliope and Hitch, and more.
Another thing that’s important to mention is that there are only a few missions out so far. Remember, the game is in early access. There will be more coming and it will be glorious. Considering this game is for the low low price of free to play, I’d say that’s a pretty fair trade off.
Don’t go into this game looking for something super complicated with a lot of customization options; it really does just boil down to “click the monsters, get your gold, level up, rinse, lather, repeat.” However, there are a few things that you can do to strategize including where you place your party members (some of them give buffs to others) and what specialties you choose for them (healing or damage, for example, or which types of party members to give buffs to.)
However, if what you’re looking for is a good idle game with witty dialogue, a handful of familiar characters and a general Dungeons & Dragons vibe, particularly set in the Forgotten Realms, you’re going to have a field day with this.
