Penny Dragon Games invites fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons players to live on the wild side with Bergin’s Book of Beasts, a 5E D&D supplement featuring over 200 new beasts plus beast themed subclasses for all your adventurers. This fully funded project already unlocked a bunch of beastly stretch goals and shows no signs of slowing down. An awesome resource for players and Dungeon Masters alike Bergin’s Book of Beasts is packed with tons of great material to unleash your inner beast. Let’s get into it.

A bestiary in the truest sense

Bergin’s Book of Beasts includes hundreds of new beast creatures for your 5E D&D games, which really elevates these natural creatures to epic new levels and I’m totally here for this. Fantastical monsters are one of the coolest and most beloved parts of the game but for me it’s often even more exciting when a world comes alive through these natural parts of the fantasy ecology. Penny Dragon Games’ approach to this project isn’t just a huge collection of stat blocks though. There’s tons of accompanying material to guide DMs and players through developing interesting encounters, adopting beasts as pets or companions and not for nothing new sources for magical abilities like the polymorph spell and of course a druid’s Wild Shape feature.

And who doesn’t get excited for new character options? Players can really get beastly with new subclasses like the College of the Duet Bard, Oath of the Pack paladin (which sounds very cool to me!), Snakebite Stalker rangers, Way of the Sacred Beasts monks and more. I’m especially curious about the strange facts and environment notes included in the book. Those sorts of details provide awesome inspiration for characters just as much as they give DMs fresh new ideas to build upon. The flavorful notes within these pages are presented through the lens of a legendary bard and druid named Bergin Glunmar, which is a really fun aspect I always appreciate in game content.

Bergin’s Book of Beasts doesn’t stop there either. This awesome tome includes dozens of new beast-flavored magic items too, a component of the game we particularly love around here at Nerdarchy. On top of all this Bergin’s Book of Beasts comes with a 100+ page cosmic horror adventure inspired by the material in the project too. Firestar Falling takes characters from 1st-5th level as they investigate a missing person, discover a corrupted meteor and encounter twisted beasts during their battle against an ancient evil.

Still not enough for you? How about rules for mutating any stat block you want with beastly powers and abilities? The toolbox approach to design in this project really appeals to me and I imagine players will get immense returns by adding this to their collection. Penny Dragon Games really put together a fantastic project here with lots of options for backers, which includes a wide variety of add-ons for even more cool beast themed content.

There’s things like encounter decks covering all three pillars of 5E D&D, event cards to make travel more memorable and even a selection of five miniatures from Firestar Falling — one for each of the adventure’s five boss encounters culminating in an epic showdown with an Avatar of Mawlek, an entity promised to appear in later book. Also related to the adventure is the Firestar Monster Deck plus the Firestar Corruption Deck players draw from when they wind up twisted by the evil influence of the meteor.

Bergin’s Book of Beasts runs through April 14 so there’s plenty of time to take advantage of the pledge options. Discover the best pledge level for you and your group of gaming friends here.
