RPG Crate Unboxing – May 2018

Getting the Most out of D&D Elves with Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes
Blade Dancer - Dexterity Based Barbarian with Gas in the D&D Tank

Hello gamer. It is time for another unboxing and I think this one is a darn good one. Presenting from RPG Crate subscription box — 5th Edition Foes. This is their crate from May that sadly had an issue and arrived a little late. But no worries, it got here and I am so glad it did. This is crate number 22 so RPG Crate has been going strong for almost two years. Well done.

RPG Crate subscription unboxing

The May 2018 RPG Crate was all abuzz with activity from Fifth Edition Foes!

May 2018 RPG Crate unboxing

From the RPG Crate May 2018 insert:

“With spring in full swing and the dog days of summer on the way, we welcome you to month 10 of our second season, Adventures on the Open Road. Queen Sphecia grows more powerful by the day, and the town of Steamford is in trouble. Dobber Plateau hides a dangerous mystery, and the characters have very little time to solve it.”

T-shirt

As almost always RPG Crate gives an awesome T-shirt. This month is no different. Frequently, if not always, the shirts are themed to the adventure. This time we get a swarm of insectile humanoids in very cool colors. You will certainly see me wearing this shirt on some of our videos in the near future. I think it is really cool. I wonder if the people behind RPG Crate have a warlock pact of their own to get shirts like this in their crates.

Effin Cool Miniatures – Premier Metal Miniatures

We get the Dragon Killer Wasp Warrior. “These creatures are not drawn to light, but they do not fear the flame.” You all know Nerdarchist Ted loves minis and getting more is always great. Now I just need to find more time to paint and assemble. This mini as you can see from the picture is a four-armed sword-wielding warrior. You can use it as a thri-kreen, as a monster, as a mutant. So many things it could be, but what ever you make it, it will be cool as it is a great mini.

Recipes for Adventure

I love the humor baked into each RPG Crate subscription box. You get a double-sided card, set with one encounter and one recipe. The recipe is always linked to the encounter on the other side. It then goes even further to make it sound like the recipe is a real thing in our world. This one is calling for dragon killer wasps. If you do not have that, use chicken but add cayenne to get the extra spice the wasp would have. Classic. But if that was not enough the recipes are valid and give you ingredients as well as cooking instructions. So much added fun. After too long I wonder if RPG Crate is going to make a gaming cook book filled with all these wonderful recipes collected over all these creates. I know I am saving all of mine. [NERDITOR’S NOTE: I’ll keep an eye out for it, for future adventures of Ingest Quest!]

Adventures on the Open Road

As we get deeper and deeper into the crate we are still pulling out good stuff.  Each month in the crate you get an adventure jam packed with goodies. Three double-sided full-sized pages made of card stock give Game Masters hours worth of ready-made adventures. Each card typically comes with a map of the area. These maps are insanely useful to use over and over again if you need a go-to. Refill the dungeon with something else and boom you are good to go. That is after you run what’s there already. This adventure is designed for an 11th-level party. This month is also full of new monsters made for this adventure. It is great to add some more new monster stat blocks to your GM tool bag. Beyond the maps and monsters each card is designed to be a piece of the adventure but are written in a format designed to pick up the adventure on any card you like. It provides a section on how the adventure begins and what’s next with each card.  These are so handy for a GM just looking to buy some time in their main storyline.

If you want to see more about these adventures, you can head over to the Nerdarchy YouTube channel as I have been running what comes in the crate for a while now. I streamline the adventure, cutting sections out so I can run it in a few hours. But we have a lot of fun with it.

Fifth Edition Foes

RPG CrateThis month’s crate was heavy. If you are clever based on what was written above you might have an inkling as to what the next item in the box was. RPG Crate clearly has a great ongoing relationship with the awesome people over to Frog God Games. So in this month’s crate you get a book that is over 250 pages full of monsters: Fifth Edition Foes! Fifth edition rules, first edition feel. This is a great book. We did a video on the Corpse Rook and that was a really cool creature.  The PDF was available during a Humble Bundle which we picked up. Looking through it, and loving Monster Manuals, I just had to have it. Now I have an extra one, so I am going to brainstorm and see what I might do with the extra copy. I am almost certain I will find a way to give it to a lucky fan, but the question is how. Stay tuned to the Nerdarchy YouTube channel and I will eventually announce it.

Enough about what I will do with the book, let’s talk about the book itself. As stated it is over 250 pages of monsters with black and white art. The stat blocks are presented in a format more inclined with, as the book stated, an earlier edition design. But once you get the hang of reading it, it is a piece of cake to use these in your game. Many great creature designs are in this book adding a plethora of new monsters to your game and your world.

Each crate always has at the bottom of it custom cut dragon foam. You can use the foam in any number of ways. Pull the pieces apart or cut nicely and design the perfect storage or transport for you minis. You can use it whole or in pieces when you have to mail something out. Or embrace your kid at heart and pull every little cube off and throw them at your gaming friends. However you want to use your dragon foam I am certain when you have need for it dragon foam will do you right.

So there you have it. RPG Crate May 2018 is ful of lots of great things. Stay tuned for June 22 where I will be running this month’s adventure.
