In this 13-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted explore undead in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons and how many monsters you can generate from one corpse.

The conversation begins with Dave and Ted sharing the inspiration for the video, which comes via TikTok from a user wondering about a ghost haunting its own zombie corpse in 5E D&D. Coincidentally the topic came up from elsewhere around the same time. They considered the potential of a monster emerging from another monster and thought, “Hold my ale.”

This thought experiment seeks to curate a collection of 5E D&D monsters representing as many body parts as possible and answer the question just how many undead monsters can a Dungeon Master generate from a single corpse? For players with a penchant for necromancy you might find further dark aspirations from our post about how Creating Undead Hordes in 5E D&D is Fun!

The video discussion focuses on seven different monsters. Dave and Ted share ideas on how to implement these concepts into a 5E D&D adventure. If you’re into the grotesque you’ll really get a kick out of this one. The adventure hooks they share highlight the different pillars of play and include suggestions for both shorter quests and longer campaigns.

How would you use this concept in your own games? Can you think of any other 5E D&D monsters to represent different components of a body? The revolting vargouille comes to mind. More undead goodness for your D&D game?

To wrap things up the video offers a closer look at an adventure with all the trappings of undead grotesquerie at your disposal and a perfect location in which they’ll be on full display. A dark drama draws heroes into a web of intrigue at Nerdarchy’s Death Pit! A small town maintains a delicate balance with a nearby Necropolis and the Death Pit shared between them. The mayor of Blackwood puts out a call for adventurers when the risen dead become problematic but the real threat is the secret shared between the town and the Death Pit. The keepers of the Necropolis, the spectral guardian hound and the living collide with the heroes stuck in the middle. Inside you’ll find a new Otherworldly Patron — The Necrogrim, seven NPCs including the Master Necromancer, two new magic items, two new creatures and the Death Pit adventure.
