Nerdarchy on Mixing D&D Races Up Tal’Dorei Reborn Style

In this 18-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted get inspired by the Critical Role campaign setting to talk about mixing and matching fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons races.

During the video they explain how half-races are representing in official 5E D&D through examples of half-elf, half-orc, tiefling, aasimar and genasi. This leads into a closer look at the Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn from Critical Role’s Darrington Press. A section of the book explores the concept of half races and how players can combine existing race options to create intriguing new character ideas.

The conversation touches on one of our own race options we came up with — the dwelf — which you can see played in Nerdarchist Ted’s Dungeons & Delving campaign. They share a discussion about half races and how they are presented in previous editions of D&D along with some of the issues that may arise when they’re incorporated into your games both narratively and mechanically. The video finishes up by looking specifically at one combination of races, an elf-dragonborn combination.

The playable Dwelf race mentioned in the video originally appeared in Taking Chances, one of our most popular titles ever. This module is a collection of games of skill and chance for Fifth Edition. Inside you’ll find new and different games for both characters and players to engage with, using their in-game skills and proficiencies for some and relying on the luck of the dice for others. Along with the games are establishments where characters can discover and play them. The largest of these, Union Salon, introduces several new tool kits and even more games giving characters a chance to use their tools in arena-style battles as well as to investigate a mystery. We’re following up with Racing Chances, a module for our Patreon supporters presenting a new kind of vehicle along with upgrades, racing rules and other challenges, new backgrounds and more.
