Nerdarchy on D&D Design: Creating New D&D Races 5e

In this 18-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted discuss motorcycles in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons and ask the question of whether they belong in a 5E D&D game.

During the video they share details from a new campaign they recently began playing, which puts this concept front and center. The hellish vehicles presented in Baldur’s Gate: Descent Into Avernus — specifically the Devil’s Ride — form the chassis for these vehicle themed adventures. Adapting these vehicles for their game includes replacing the Soul Coin fueled cycles with something less fiendish in nature. The video explores different options and changes they’ve made including what they settled on for their campaign.

The conversation broadens into what sorts of campaigns lend themselves to motorcycle gang concepts. Touchstones for this discussion include post apocalyptic scenarios using the beloved Dark Sun campaign setting for context as well as high fantasy circumstances demonstrated in settings like Eberron.

The new campaign featuring arcanotechnological motorcycles began with a high octane race through a massive domed city. We took Nerdarchist Dave’s ideas straight from his game to create the Racing Chances module for our Patreon supporters. This module expands our incredibly popular Taking Chances, providing a whole new sort of skillful challenge to drop right into your games. Inside you’ll find guidance to run your own vehicle race along with a new vehicle for racers — semi-sentient Vargarian Cycles! There’s also upgrades for the cycles, a variety of racer teams and two new backgrounds (Chaos Storm Chaser and Vargarian Cyclist).
