Nerdarchy on D&D Design: Creating New D&D Races 5e

Nerdarchy on Dungeons, Dragons, and Motorcycle Gangs
RPG Ideas — Shields

In this 15-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted discuss creating a new race for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. This D&D idea comes from their own home game.

During the video they explain the inspiration for the unusual anthropomorphic chinchilla race called Nibblers in the campaign. Since Dave has been a chinchilla pet owner for many years he of course brings that experience to the table through interesting details and characteristics. In the campaign so far Nibblers appear only as NPCs but if you know Nerdarchy you can be sure we’ll develop those ideas into useful material for players and Dungeon Masters alike. (Playable Nibbler race, anyone?)

The conversation covers a variety of facts about chinchillas like their impressive agility and jumping ability. Calling them Nibblers has a root in their biology too, which you’ll learn about in the video. Taking their qualities and broadening those concepts to imagine them as sentient humanoids was quite a lot of fun for Dave and the players too, who like the video commenters fell in love with them immediately.

The new campaign featuring Nibblers with a focus on arcanotechnological motorcycles began with a high octane race through a massive domed city. We took Nerdarchist Dave’s ideas straight from his game to create the Racing Chances module for our Patreon supporters. This module expands our incredibly popular Taking Chances, providing a whole new sort of skillful challenge to drop right into your games. Inside you’ll find guidance to run your own vehicle race along with a new vehicle for racers — semi-sentient Vargarian Cycles! There’s also upgrades for the cycles, a variety of racer teams and two new backgrounds (Chaos Storm Chaser and Vargarian Cyclist).
