Nerdarchy on 3 RPGs that are Better than D&D for Beginners
RPG Ideas — Relationships

In this 25-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted dive into the rules of Dungeons & Dragons throughout the editions from AD&D to fifth edition D&D.

During the video they explain what a pass or fail RPG system is and D&D’s place in tabletop gaming. For contrast the discussion includes non-pass or fail game systems through a variety of examples like Powered by the Apocalypse, Quest and Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars RPG.

The conversation explores how non-pass or fail systems work and covers some pros and cons of both types of games. Some of the aspects they touch on involve the ease of play, level of improvisation required and more clearly defined outcomes and expectations. These are paired with a look at how gameplay is rewarded, the degree of static results, the importance of rules mastery and the group dynamic fostered by the system.

The modules we create use the incredibly popular Fifth Edition system. In our Dark Paths module series adventurers often face difficult choices and even their successes are often stained with ill tidings. The first module in this series leads to The Chained One, a living portal, a vast being existing simultaneously in more than one place. Could this being of malediction be the cause of all the feral animals in the region? The monks of the chained fist would know but communication from their temple mysteriously stopped and if the entity in the catacombs broke free, doom surely follows.
