Nerdarchy on D&D Warlock: 5 Best Invocations for Exploration

In this 17-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted dive into lycanthropes in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. They ask the question of what it looks like from a D&D player perspective as well as the Dungeon Master.

The conversation begins with Dave and Ted discussing the baseline lycanthrope experience and addressing why this is an unusual character option. The Path of the Beast for barbarians offers an official character option adjacent to lycanthropy but not a true representation of this classic curse. From here they dovetail into how lycanthropy is presented in earlier editions of D&D.

Ted explains what inspired this video discussion, giving a nod to Mini Terrain Domain’s Scribes and Scrolls campaign wherein the adventuring party faced their own lycanthropic scenario. Dave and Ted also point towards a post here on the website with tips, ideas and suggestions for playing werewolves, vampires and other monstrous creatures as player characters. You can find the post here.

The rest of the video breaks down each of the official lycanthrope creatures in 5E D&D. They discuss the werebear, wererat, werebat, wereboar, wereraven, weretiger and werewolf. For each version they make note of the mechanical benefits such a state confers on a character.

Rounding out the conversation they explore what would a lycanthropy focused campaign might look like. They offer a few different concepts for players interested in such a campaign to consider.
