Nerdarchy on Be the Most Spell Shrouded 5E Wizard EVER

RPG Ideas — Fame
D&D Ideas — Tropes Revisited

In this 14-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted explore wizards, spellcasting and magic in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons. Nerdarchist Ted followed up with a Short with a question for 5E D&D wizards out there too. We’re having a lot of fun experimenting with Shorts. Check this one out and share your thoughts in the comments here.

This video came about following a Live Chat Revivified where the topic came up regarding D&D wizards and changes throughout the editions when it comes to casting a cascade of spells upon themselves before battle. Before 5E D&D came along Concentration did not limit a caster to a single spell but rather came into question after a spell had already been cast and represented the wizard’s mental fortitude to keep it going when they took damage. (Incidentally we turn all our live chats into audio podcast versions for Patreon supporters. You can learn more about this and snag yourself a FREE sample bundle of content here on the website.)

In the video they breakdown the concept of Concentration including where and how it comes into play in 5E D&D spellcasting. The conversation touches on how a spell’s duration becomes a factor when it comes to planning ahead for a character’s prepared or known spells. The discussion then covers all the 5E D&D spells requiring Concentration, level by level. The video wraps up with some tips and advice for managing your own characters’ Concentration and spell selections.

Protip: Whether you love it or hate it eldritch blast is a 5E D&D warlock’s bread and butter. (It’s sorta been their thing since the introduction of this class in 3.5 D&D.) When you choose your own warlock’s spells it’s worth keeping Concentration in mind. Since warlocks have very few spell slots and eldritch blast makes for a terrific go-to spell without costing a spell slot, consider choosing spells with Concentration. Keeping a spell going for use round after round squeezes the most magic out of that single spell slot.

One of the 250 magic items in our Mage Forge collection goes where designers fear to tread and provides a path for spellcasters to concentrate on more than one spell at a time. A villain from Nerdarchist Ted’s monthly live campaign wielded the Glaive of Wizardry against the heroes and nearly destroyed them. You can incorporate this powerful weapon into your own games along with hundreds more exciting new magic items with your own Mage Forge collection. Check it out!
