Marvelous Phile: Character Creation Part 2

Critter Corner: Discussing Critical Role Episode 1
Secret Goals in RPGs and Why You Need To Use Them Now

Hey, guys, Professor Bill of Comic Book University (where tuition is always free) and I’m bringing you the 11th article of the Marvelous Phile, an homage to the excerpt in Dragon Magazine back in the ’80s.

Game mechanic – character creation

Marvel RPG

Right now, we’re going to talk about limitations. When we look at the description of some of the powers in the back of the Players Handbook (Appendix A) we see that some of the powers will suggest limitations. Some, like Water Breathing, even come with a mandatory limitation if certain powers are chosen.

Let’s say, though, you roll for your powers and you’re not happy with the low power rank of those powers. Maybe you’d like to take a limitation or two to increase your ability.

Example 1:

Ben Grimm was a pilot who took a trip into space and was affected by cosmic radiation, mutating him into The Thing. The player making The Thing rolls Body Armor and his power is a mere Excellent (EX (20). The player decides to take several limitations to increase his power. He says the power makes his skin a bright orange, rocky hide and he can never shut off the power to blend in with humanity. He’ll also reduce his agility by -1 CS permanently. The Judge decides to increase his Body Armor to IN (40) and also raise his Strength by +1 CS because she feels bad for the ugly character.

Game mechanic – generating talents and contacts

At this point you’re going to round out your character with talents and contacts. These features allow you to get bonuses to what you want to do in the game but they also make your character more interesting. Every roleplaying game I’ve ever played allows for talents and most introduce contacts, so this isn’t a huge stretch of the imagination. Simply remember that, with contacts, these only refer to major contacts strategically located around the game world to will give you access to things you otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

Example 2:

The characters just destroyed half of Allenhurst, Pennsylvania while fighting The Absorbing Man. The police want to arrest the heroes but one of the PC’s pulls out his PBA card. Yeah, his dad’s a cop in Dutch Country.

That’s it for this week, everybody. Make sure to check out my accompanying video and keep gaming.

Marvel Super Heroes Roleplaying Game streams live on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on the Nerdarchy YouTube channel. Viewers in the live chat are encouraged to get their percentile dice and join in as Professor Bill leads Season Two players Nerdarchist Dave, Travis Boles from WebDM Nerdarchy Nerditor-in-chief Doug, novelist and staff writer Megan R. Miller and Nerdarchy superfan Fraginator through a street-level campaign featuring original superhero characters.

You can learn more about how karma is gained and used by viewers in the live stream chat here. Live chat participants can use karma to affect the results of dice rolls using the same mechanic as the players. Before rolling the dice, a player can spend karma to add to the result on a 1:1 ratio. After a dice roll, karma can be added to the result on a 2:1 ratio, with a minimum of 10 karma spent. For example, if Ash is about to make a roll to use his Fire Manipulation power, Megan can choose spend five karma to add an equal amount to the dice result. If Megan decides to roll without using karma, and rolls a 60 (a green result), she could spend 22 karma to add 11 to the result, bringing to total to 71 (a yellow result).

Marvel Super Heroes Roleplaying Game Season Two is produced by War Eagle Keep, creating overlays, running sound and a million other things that make to make this live game awesome in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Check out War Eagle Keep on Instagram @war.eagle.keep
