Kickstarter Korner for July 2018, Week 3

D&D Adventure in Real Life with True Dungeon
Put Your Gaming Set Proficiency to Work with Games within Games in D&D

Each week during the Quests & Adventures live chat, Saturday at 2 p.m. eastern, Nerdarchists Dave and Ted and Nate the Nerdarch hang out live with fans from the Nerdarchy YouTube channel. It’s a chance to share announcements and news, answer questions from the live chat and generally just hang out and talk nerdy with the Nerdarchy community.

In the description of each weekly video, Nerdarchist Ted compiles a list and links to all the videos and website content from the week. But he also shares a selection of cool Kickstarter campaigns. As an avid Kickstarter supporter, he’s happy to share his favorite RPG and gaming-related Kickstarters with you, the Nerdarchy community. Enjoy!

While working on an adventure to run at GameHole Con, where Nerdarchy will be one of the many special guests of the event Nov. 8-11 in Madison, Wisconsin, I came to a point where I wasn’t sure about something. It’s a higher level adventure and the sticking point was related to the characters’ involvement. After a moment of consideration, I recognized a perfect opportunity to let the players steer the ship and fill in the blanks. Particularly for an adventure that presupposes the characters have been adventuring for some time, creating these sorts of scenarios for players is a great way to get them more invested and involved. The collaborative part of the storytelling (my favorite part!) can get started before the adventure even begins.

You can hear and read about tons of examples like this in Nerdarchy’s videos and website posts, from what to do about dead end plots (spoilers: no such thing) to letting players affect the game world, and in our live and recorded gameplays.

Passing the ball isn’t only for GMs either. Players can just as effectively engage and support each other during a campaign. A terrific example is the Save or Dice: Harbinger campaign where Nerdarchist Dave and Web DM’s Jim Davis and Jonathan Pruitt play as halflings who are all cousins. They are constantly prompting each other to tell anecdotes about their family and past lives.

Spurring your fellow players into action is another way to pass the ball too. On the Greyhawk Channel’s Secrets of Castle Greyhawk campaign, my character Gusamon Gusfun more than once put himself in danger because he greatly admires and looks up to his companions, often passing the ball to them whether they like it or not!

Situations where you can pass the ball to your friends at the gaming table help move things along and get everyone involved in the creativity. So the next time you’re stuck, remember the spirit of any RPG is the team of people participating alongside you, so pass the ball over to one of them and watch the magic happen.
