The Gift Of Friendship with D&D

Start off with a bang! Trials and triumphs of a full-time nerd in a part-time world
Drawing Out The Poison: The unfortunate event of removing someone from your RPG party

Here is our awesome group! We call ourselves the “Unicorns of love”… Inside joke, of course.

This is the the mural I painted on our living room wall. Tolkien inspired. 😉

This past week brought about some changes for our D&D group, and what almost turned into disaster or possibly the end of our gaming table ended up turning into the best possible thing that could have happened for our game! Our normal meeting place was denied to us by the runner of the local comic shop because of “liability issues,” the real reason being a couple of old, washed-up co-owners who glared at us across the room and obviously had a hard time with how much fun we were all having in our “satan worship” … lol!

Without going into details about that, the disappointment began to sink in that the game would be cancelled and all of us were really bummed out. As Cheyne, my husband who is the DM for this group, and I pulled our heads together, we were able to rearrange our house a bit and decided to invite our gaming group over to our place. With a few doubts and some hesitation, we were able to really make it into an awesome space for gaming, and all of our players showed up as well as two others who were also interested in playing! Our two children under the age of five went down to sleep, the players all showed up at once, our virtual fireplace via Youtube was on, tea lights lit, food and drinks were all placed, each friend bringing something for everyone, and the game continued!

Cheyne made it really “fantasy feeling” by leading the guests up from our back alleyway with a lit tea lamp through the snowy night to reach the house! It was truly awesome and it got the players really into the whole “gaming vibe” for the night! We all took shots, had great food, joined in cheery moods, and came together as friends and fellow nerds alike in a totally unordinary way. It was totally amazing how so many people showed and cared so much about being generous and open to the new changes of the gaming table. There really is a very special feeling in a room full of people who are there because they want to be, who truly care and really get involved with what the DM is painting in their minds. Everyone was on board and had such great attitudes, laughing the whole time, and truly just had a lot of fun for the entire four hours that the game lasted!

I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun with that many people at once! What an incredible thing to witness, especially in our super anti-social time and place in our society. There isn’t much else that can truly bring people together in such a positive, creative and memorable way! A lot of the players were people who were new and I had never met before, but by the first hour of the game I really just came to love all the people at the table. The differences, the similarities and the imagination of each individual was so freaking fun and exciting to witness! Certain character personalities just had us rolling with laughter and others with shock as the game truly brought up unique and new circumstances with each dice roll; time flew by, just as time does when we enjoy ourselves the most. It felt great to make bonds with all these people who had such unique and different backgrounds, who were from different places and had such different experiences than my own. It really made the game colorful and entertaining.

One of our players who is hilarious and had us laughing the whole time with his creative decisions of “I’ma slap that bitch” move, is our “super fabulous” friend from NYC. Another player is one who has lived in Russia, the UK, Japan and more, and he was so freaking cool; you would never had even guessed his life adventures from just meeting him. Each player has their own story, and each individual only adds to the adventurous “spunk,” if you will, of the game.

I loved how everyone who was there truly wanted to be there; some even driving 30-40 minutes and just made the choice and the effort to genuinely come and have fun, what D&D is truly about! We all let go, relaxed, and joined in one mind to make our own little universe here in Central Oregon an incredible fantasy world.

I hope this group continues to play for years to come! This kind of fun is only addicting in a really healthy way! I love D&D for the opportunities of genuine and positive creativity it creates. There is really not much else out there that can do that. Get together in your homes, be authentic with the people around you, and just see the magic come to life!

Stay Nerdy my friends!
