Sometime around the end of the 1960s wargamers began popularizing dice with non-cubical polyhedral shapes. It comes as no surprise then how these funny shaped dice became synonymous with the tabletop roleplaying game hobby that emerged shortly after — especially considering the most popular RPG of them all evolved from those very wargames.

Whether a modern day RPG hobbyist proudly rolls the original set of dice they’ve had since way back when (you know, the ones where you had to fill in the numbers with a crayon) or boasts a prodigious collection of dice with different sizes, shapes, colors and materials we all share a great love for rolling them.

Sure, there’s some outliers like Amber Diceless Roleplaying Game, Dread and Castle Falkenstein bucking the dice trend but by and large RPG nerds hold great affection for small, throwable objects with marked sides that can rest in multiple positions used for generating random numbers. We certainly do!

Some gamers make certain to carry dice on them at all times because one never knows when the opportunity for some RPG entertainment may emerge. No small number of players keep a special set around for each particular character they play either. In addition to generating random numbers it’s not uncommon to see players spinning, stacking, sorting or otherwise fiddling with dice as well. (Can you spin a d4? It’s not easy but it can be done!)

In recent years a lot of people began dabbling in making their own dice too. Crafty creators offer a never ending variety of styles and artistry. Dice made of exotic woods, glass, metal and other materials are growing in popularity along with dice featuring all manner of objects embedded inside from sailing ships to rubber duckies, flowers, skulls and everything in between.
