Otherworldly Patron – Custom Warlock – Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition
Nerdarchy did a video talking about warlocks and we did a video talking about dragon familiars. On that second video we talked about the possibility of a Warlock choosing a Dragon as their otherworldly Patron.
In order to go into detail on this you have to examine what the warlock is in 5th edition. The warlock is a being being imbued with magical power from another source. The power extended to the warlock comes with some unwritten price that the player and the dungeon master can work out or through before and during game play.
Warlock in Dungeons and Dragons
So this otherworldly patron what can it be? In Dungeons and Dragons this patron can’t really be a deity that has followers because you would just be a cleric and worship the deity. A god or goddess in our fantasy worlds have the ability to take on worshipers and dole out spells accordingly. A god or goddess actually gets more powerful the more followers and worshipers they collect.
A patron on the other hand might have followers but they would be few in comparison to a deity and if they had worshipers their number would be negligent. As such the patron only has so much in the way of power to distribute. So they offer it up in bargain with a soul in need. By getting themselves a warlock they get a follower who will need to further the cause of the patron.
A patron might take on a warlock and leave him or her alone until one crucial moment where the decision of their next action could either benefit or hinder the patron. This crucial moment is the point in time when a character needs to determine if they remain a warlock, die or have something else happen.
A patron could also be molding, shaping a guiding a character throughout their journey so when it comes to that fateful decision they will be in the correct mindset to automatically make the choice that will benefit the patron.
So with that Dragons are incredibly powerful and near immortal beings. They posses great magical abilities and there is nothing to say that they could not be a Patron to a Warlock.
Custom Warlock otherwordly Patron – 5th edition
Your patron is a mighty dragon. You can work with your DM to determine the type of dragon you are serving. The dragons motivations are in accruing power, knowledge and wealth. You could serve as something as simple as a warning should any in the area decide to attack the dragon or you could be spy gaining all the secrets you can to share with your master.
Expanded spell list
The dragon allow you to choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following are added to the warlock spell list for you.
- Spell level Spells
- 1st Detect magic, shield
- 2nd Detect thoughts, Locate object
- 3rd Fireball, Nondetection
- 4th Conjure Minor Elementals, Polymorph
- 5th Cone of Cold, Legend Lore
Starting at 1st level your patron bestows the eyes of his kind upon you. You gain darkvision out to 60 feet. If you already have it extend it by 30 feet. Additionally you gain the ability to inspire fear or terror in others. As an action, you can cause each creature in a 10 foot cube originating from you to make a wisdom saving throw against your warlock spell DC. The creatures that fail their saving throw are frightened by you until the end of their next turn.
Draconic Breath weapon
Starting at 6th level your patron has changed you in a profound way. You gain the use of a breath weapon exactly like that of a dragon born. It is exactly like that written on page 34 of your players handbook of 5th edition. You must choose the dragon type of your patron.
Draconic Resilience
Beginning at 10th level your patron bestows its draconic resilience upon you. What ever type of dragon you serve you get resistance to the element it breathes as well as advantage on any saving throw that might cause that type of damage.
Draconic Enchantment
When you reach 14th level your affinity towards your patrons element is strengthened. As a bonus action you can imbue your weapon with the element of your patron. It lasts as long as you decide to keep it active. You can have it active for a number of rounds per day equal to your warlock level. Turning it off can be done as a free action. When you hit you do a d6 of elemental damage equal to that of your patron.
So there you have it. Go ahead and let me know what you think of my addition to the Warlock from Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition.

June 18, 2015 at 1:01 amI like it! Here is the inevitable question though – if I were playing a Dragonborn of the same type as my patron, would I gain any advantages at 6th and 10th levels (breath weapon & resistance)?

July 19, 2015 at 7:05 pmI like it a lot. In fact, a player of mine wanted to play a warlock with this sort of pact, which is what led me here. Not a big fan of the 14th level ability, so I'm probably going to swap it out for the dragon bloodline sorcerer's wings ability at that level, as having wings was one of the things he wanted for his character anyway. So, thanks! This has saved me a bit of work.
