Nerdarchy on What is an Adventurer in Dungeons and Dragons
In this 22-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted dive into the editions of Dungeons & Dragons and dissect the question, “What is an adventurer?” Characters in 5E D&D are much different from AD&D characters. Therefore the reasons they might adventure would be very different.
Comments from another video about metagaming inspired this video discussion. The conceit there is common folk of a fantasy world probably wouldn’t know too much about monsters or their lore but adventurers would, which begs the question addressed in this video. Establishing a baseline perspective on adventurers is key. What does this mean and who are the people engaged in this behavior in your games?
Nerdarchist Ted draws on his LARP experiences to help provide context for adventurer tropes like the concept of a Quest Board. The conversation dovetails from there into a look at adventuring as a vocation throughout the editions of D&D. The discussion uses the scope of the setting as a touchstone for adventurers’ place in the world. In the video they ponder what sorts of people undertake the risky proposition of being an adventurer and on a broader scale the concept of adventuring companies. In the context of the current edition the conversation wraps up with a look at how 5E D&D skews the perspective on the traditional adventurer style.
