Nerdarchy on Nerdarchy’s Guide to D&D Monsters: Beasts

In this 15-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted give tips for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons players and the Dungeon Master when it comes to the D&D monster type of beasts.

During the video they cover the basics of beasts and what you need to know about these natural animals that’ve always been part of the game. They discuss how these relatively low level threats are often used as pets, guards and mounts by sentient creatures too. Generally unintelligent these non-humanoid critters are a vital part of the fantasy ecology, although lacking in formal society or language in most cases.

The conversation includes ideas for running combat encounters with beasts and what sorts of motivations these creatures have. The video also touches on social and exploration encounters featuring beasts along with a breakdown of how many of this creature type can be found in official 5E D&D material, the range of challenge rating — including one very unusual outlier — and further breaks down this creature type by tiers of play.

Rounding out the discussion they provide some pointers on what to know when your adventurers face beasts like useful skills and spells. Dovetailing with this topic they make a point to illustrate how even through the use of magic and other means of communication beasts are still mundane animals and share some thoughts on managing these sorts of scenarios.

The mundane beasts of your world can illustrate a lot of variety and fantasy elements too. One of our most popular creations is a resource for Fifth Edition Game Masters and players alike with five new and unique beasts ready for your game. Inside you’ll find information and rules for these creatures with regards to trade goods, training and adding flavor to your campaign world. There’s even multiple versions of the different mounts we introduce. Perhaps you’ll even find your druids assuming the guise of a dranther or kangoram in your game.
