In this 12-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted discuss the electrum piece in and throughout the editions of Dungeons & Dragons.

This video emerged thanks to a meme we posted on Nerdarchy the Facebook page, where we have a lot of fun engaging in discourse with our community. If you enjoy these sorts of interactions you can go check out the meme in question and give us a follow.

In the video they share their favorite comments about electrum like how one player thought they were lightning generating magic items, another how they’re the currency used for pay commodes and how it became fantasy crypto in another’s campaign world.

The meat of the discussion explains what electrum is along with some real world historical examples before delving into Dave and Ted’s personal experience with this unusual D&D coinage. They also try to figure out just why people seem to react so strongly to electrum. If you care to weigh in please share you own thoughts in the comments below.

Because of the unusual nature of electrum in D&D the video presents a few ideas for players to incorporate electrum into their own games whether as a trade good, regional peculiarity or even as a means to create interesting roleplaying opportunities.

Electrum makes a great way to represent ancient civilizations in your D&D games. In our own Forgotten Oasis modules travelers discover a temple beneath the welcome waters hiding an ancient secret. Careful investigation and dealing with these echoes of the past brings adventurers face to face with the handmaiden of the Forgotten Goddess herself along with other mysteries from a bygone age like perhaps why they used weird currency like electrum?
