Nerdarchy on D&D Magic Items: Get More Attunement Slots

In this 11-minute video on Nerdarchy the YouTube channel Nerdarchists Dave and Ted look at magic items in fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons and how to get access to more attunement slots for your D&D character.

The conversation begins with Dave and Ted explaining the premise for the video, which does not merely point players towards playing an 18th level artificer who can attune to up to six magic items at once. Artificer is one of the components of this concept though along with paladins, rangers, warlocks and wizards. All these classes offer pathways to making the most of magic items requiring attunement through their access to additional creatures under their control.

Iron defenders, steeds, beast companions, drake companions, familiars, thralls and the like can all become attuned to magic items just like the players’ characters. Most of these possess at least rudimentary Intelligence and several boast scores higher than the average 5E D&D party member.

In the video Dave and Ted discuss some of the pitfalls, drawbacks and restrictions to these sorts of creatures attuning to magic items. These complications may arise due to a creature’s ability to speak or understand language, whether it has hands or other appropriate appendages and of course the action economy of 5E D&D. Items like belts, rings, amulets, circlets and similar accessories could all conceivably be worn by nonhumanoid creatures.

In contrast you’ll run into some difficulty with things like armor and weapons. Magic items with static benefits make an excellent fit but something like a circlet of blasting makes a terrific magic item for an NPC companion. Not for nothing bracelets of trading from our own Mage Forge collection would be pretty sweet for such a creature, allowing it to magically switch places with whoever wears the matching wrist accessory. There’s 250 magic items in the collection and you’ll discover plenty of awesome magic items to share with your NPC allies.

Do you have any stories from your 5E D&D games about characters whose bound companions make clever use of magic items? Let us know in the comments and as always, stay nerdy!
