Board Games in Review – Red Dragon Inn

Board Games in Review - Boss Monster - Card Game
Board Games in Review - Batman Fluxx - Card Game

red dragon InnHello and Happy Monday everyone.  I had a chance this weekend for Nerdarchy to play a new game: Red Dragon Inn.  And it was a fun time.

Red Dragon Inn is the game of what happens in the Inn after the adventure is over.  There are two components to the game. You have gold, and you need gold to drink and gamble as well as your alcohol and fortitude. If you run out of gold you stumble off to bed, if your alcohol level ever meets or exceeds your fortitude you pass out drunk and the Inn and party members take your gold.

Save Your Gold in Red Dragon Inn

You actually divide your remaining gold in half.  The inn takes takes the big half.  You divide the rest among the other red dragon innplayers.  Should it not divide evenly the Inn gets the unsplit portion as well.

The phases of the game are pretty simple: Discard and draw, Action, Buy Drinks and Drink.  Some things are optional, but the drinking portion is not. Now some of you might look at this and say this might be a cool game to use alcoholic beverages with and sadly our group found that nothing could be further from the truth.

The game sounds pretty easy.  Stay sober and do not lose all your money, but when you look at all the things that are happening and sometimes at a fast pace losing your face paced thinking skills is a sure fire way to lose this game quickly.

Now in the base game you get four characters; a fighter, a wizard, a thief and a priestess.  As you would guess each character deck has a certain play style and mechanic that works to their advantage.  The thief is very good at manipulating gold.  The wizard has a way with avoiding drinks.  The cleric has a way of alleviating fortitude.  The fighter I found is more middle of the road, good at all not great at any of them.

Mt favorite deck is the wizard and he has an awesome bunny familiar named pookie and many of his cards are red dragon innflavored with this silly little pet.  And if that is not good enough for you you can grab an expansion and just play as Pookie. –>

When they made this game, they made it with the knowledge that there were going to be expansions and oh boy are there.  This game seems to be wildly successful.  It looks like there are about 13 expansions out for this game so great gift for that gamer in your life.  You can grab the base game here.  When they made the game some cards have references to things that are not in the base game.  They are still playable but there are other effects should your race be different.

As always thanks for reading and Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy!!
