Board Games in Review – Boss Monster – Card Game

Board Games in Review - Red Dragon Inn

board gamesHello again my fellow board game lovers.  Nerdarchist Ted is back to review another board game.  Today we look at Boss Monster.  This great card game made with art in tribute to the old style of video games but has awesome references to them in the art and flavor text as well.

In Boss Monster you get to play the bad guy and have heroes try to raid your dungeon.  You get to out out rooms that try to stop them from getting to you.  You have different types of rooms such as trap or monster rooms.  You get to play them out in front of your “Boss Monster” to protect him or her from the adventurers that want to slay you.

Can You Be Top Boss in Boss Monster?

You also get spells and make sure you save them for a proper time as spells can be rare during some play through.  Boss MonsterIn my first game I think only one spell was used if it was used at all.  In fact in Boss Monster it is a card game of resource management.

You have your Boss’ hit point and have to decide when to take a hit or not.  You have the room and spell cards in your hand and you have to make wise choices as to when to use what card and when.  Each room card has one or more hero icons on it and that determines the appeal your dungeon is to certain hero types.

card gameIf you make a dungeon that is all about clerics and the beginning part of the hero deck is full of clerics you could wind up in the lead with a good dungeon or a very beat up Boss if you dungeon is not well prepared.  Each turn the heroes evaluate the appeal of each dungeon and if all players match the hero stays in town to deliberate until there is a clear winner in appeal.  So tactically speaking you can use it to stall allowing more time to prepare for a heavy hitting hero or to diminish your own dungeon to give that hero to an unprepared player.

The game play is rather quick 15-30 minutes of game play depending on how many are playing and up to 4 people can play with the base game.

You can pick up your own copy here.  Thanks for reading Level up your boss monster and remember, Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy!
