5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons makes making background choices easy. But the thing to remember is that characters are more than the mechanics on a character sheet.
In order to make your character enjoyable during the game you need to make them feel real. If your group is doing a session zero you can figure out what everyone is playing and you can begin linking your stories together.
Whats Your Backstory in Dungeons and Dragons
Your background needs contains everything, your entire story up to the point that you become an adventurer. So there are lots of questions you need to ask your self. What does your character look like. What makes them stand out visually from anyone in a crowd or do they not?
What rivals or enemies are in your past that may come back to haunt your career. What contacts do you have the you can get help or information from, or that might offer potential quests.
What goals do you have? Can you separate them out to player goals and character goals? Are you prepared to forgo these goals in lieu of story goals that might come up?
5th Edition Backstory – How Do You Make Yours?
When linking backstories feel free to make an ally that you become lifelong friends or nothing more than a chance crossing? What part of these stories can link to the main story or campaign arc?
When you have all of this fleshed out you will create a rounded character with flaws and goals connections and enemies. It will give the dungeon master fuel for your character so that interesting things will happen for you and you will be connected to the happenings of the game.
