Constitution: Tough as Nails, or Fragile as Glass?
In Dungeons & Dragons, Constitution is the stat that determines how much punishment your character can take before they fall. It governs your hit points, stamina, and overall endurance. But Constitution isn’t just about how many hits you can survive; it also shapes how your character handles the daily rigors of adventuring. Are they a hardy, never-sick, always-ready-for-action type? Or do they catch every cold and wind up gasping for breath after a long walk? Whether your Constitution score is high or low, it can influence how your character behaves both in and out of combat. Let’s explore ten quirks for characters with high Constitution and ten for those with low Constitution, adding some flavor to how your character handles life’s physical challenges. High Constitution Quirks:
- Never Gets Sick – Whether it’s poison, illness, or exhaustion, your character seems to shrug it all off with ease. They might even boast about how long it’s been since they last had a sniffle.
- Thrives in Harsh Conditions – Cold, heat, rain—it doesn’t matter. Your character never complains about the weather and can handle extreme environments with ease.
- Outlasts Everyone – Whether it’s a drinking contest or a forced march, you always seem to be the last one standing while others drop from fatigue.
- Eats Anything – Your character has an iron stomach, able to eat the most questionable food without getting sick, and might even enjoy meals that others find revolting.
- Barely Sleeps – Needing less rest than most, you’re always up early and ready to go, even after a long day of adventuring.
- Heals Quickly – You recover from injuries faster than others, often surprising those around you with how quickly you bounce back after a battle.
- Stoic in Pain – Pain doesn’t seem to bother you much. You’re the type to shrug off wounds that would have others writhing in agony.
- Stamina for Days – You can push yourself for long periods without tiring, whether it’s running, climbing, or holding your breath for an impressive amount of time.
- Resistant to Poison – You’re less affected by poisons or toxins, possibly to the point of sampling dangerous substances just to show off your resistance.
- Tough Skin – Your body is physically tougher than most, with scars, callouses, and an overall resilience that makes you seem nearly indestructible.
Low Constitution Quirks:
- Gets Sick Easily – You’re always catching something, from common colds to serious illnesses, and are constantly looking for ways to avoid getting infected.
- Avoids Overexertion – You tire easily, preferring to pace yourself or avoid strenuous activity altogether to prevent exhaustion.
- Lightweight Drinker – One drink is enough to get you tipsy, and you avoid alcohol (or other substances) because of how quickly it affects you.
- Prone to Fainting – Stress, lack of food, or even sudden shock can send you swooning or feeling faint, much to your party’s frustration.
- Sensitive Stomach – Rich or exotic foods don’t sit well with you, and you might be known for your picky eating or frequent stomach aches.
- Needs More Rest – You require extra sleep or downtime to recover, often dragging behind the rest of the group or waking up tired despite a full night’s sleep.
- Bruises Easily – Even light taps seem to leave bruises on your skin, and injuries linger longer than they should.
- Low Pain Tolerance – You’re the first to complain about a minor injury, wincing at cuts, scratches, or even small discomforts.
- Breathless – Physical activities like running, climbing, or even walking long distances leave you winded quickly, and you often ask for breaks.
- Easily Overwhelmed – Whether it’s extreme temperatures or being pushed past your limits, your body can’t handle intense situations, and you quickly suffer the consequences.

It defines how your character handles the rough and tumble of adventuring—from harsh weather and long marches to how well they bounce back from wounds or illness. Whether your character is as tough as nails or someone who needs to catch their breath after a brisk walk, playing up their quirks related to Constitution can add extra depth and roleplaying opportunities.
