Board Games in Review – Legendary – Deck Building Game
Hello and Happy Monday. And if it is Monday you all know what time it is. That’s right time for another board game review. Last week I veered away from my typical board games to talk about dice. You can read that article here.
I am a fan of deck building games. I have been playing them for a while and for a long time Thunderstone was my favorite. The complex set up eventually became replaced by Ascension. For Christmas I received a copy of Legendary: The Marvel Deck Building Game.
Not only does this game combine the cool characters you love, both good and bad, but you actually have win conditions and bad guys to fight. The mechanic is really cool and takes some time to get in stride. Depending on which super villain you are up against and what hero selection you have it can go from hard to really challenging.
Are You Legendary – Can you take down the Mastermind?
There are so many mechanics and symbols that if you are not into complex games I would back away from this one. But if you think you can handle it dive right into the fight. The bad guy deck is made up of lesser bad guys and henchman. It can either be chosen randomly or picked, but it also has bystanders which you of course would like to rescue.
If the bad guy has bystanders with him and he gets away each player at the table chooses two cards from their hand to get rid of. Not only does that make the next round harder for all players but it then makes it more likely that more bad guys get away. It can be a viscous cycle if you have too many bystanders all clumped together in the bad guy deck. In our first game, I was playing with Nerdarchist Dave and Just Bart, we were still getting a grip on the rules and the blob got away with two bystanders.
We realized then that not only was this game a game where an individual wants to win but you also have to stratagize and play part of the game as a team if you do not want to lose. We played about half of the game one card away from losing. Eventually we managed to defeat that villain and claim victory. In that game, my choices and luck did not go well and I came in last. It was all good because the game was fun and we can always play again.
The game plays like any other Deck Building Game in which each player starts with the same set of cards with an ever changing set of cards in the middle that are interacted with. Similar to Thunder stone there are things to fight but because of the mechanic of the villains moving they can escape causing harm to the party.
So if you are ready to fight a master villain and defend the city then you just might be Legendary. Pick up your copy of this awesome Deck Building Game here. As always thanks for reading and Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy!
