WizKids Captures the Terror of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden in Miniatures

5 Performance Skill Challenges for 5E D&D
5 Favorite 5E D&D Characters

A new book for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons released and with it another fantastic set of miniatures blows in from the north courtesy of our friends over at WizKids. Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frost Maiden pits players against a harsh winter environment and the denizens dwelling there. So whether you are running this adventure or looking for awesome winter themed miniatures these ones certainly inspire some great roleplaying games. The Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden set of miniatures comes with over 40 options in blind purchase boxes as well as a massive Chardalyn Dragon miniature as part of the D&D: Icons of the Realms series available for purchase singly.

5E D&D Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden chardalyn dragon

The chardalyn dragon is a construct fashioned from pieces of chardalyn that have been assembled in the form of a dragon, as seen in the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden. [Image courtesy Wizards of the Coast]

As a miniatures collector throughout all the editions of D&D I own all the large dragons Wizkids has put out including the amazing Colossal Red Dragon. When I first saw the images of the enormous Chardalyn Dragon I was curious to see how big this model would actually be. When it showed up I was surprised at the heft of this “miniature.” This beautifully sculpted dragon is on a clear 8 inch base. Beyond the stat block in the book this dragon physically could be so many more things.

“The Chardalyn Dragon is a construct. The evil suffusing the dragon’s chardalyn body imbues the construct with malevolence, allowing it to enjoy the terror it stokes. This malevolence extends beyond the dragon, corrupting other creatures who get too close to it. Those affected by this malevolence become eager to help the dragon inflict suffering on others. An incredibly powerful foe, the dragon likes to tear foes apart with its jaws and claws, as well as knock down doors and other structures. Against enemies it cannot reach, it fires a beam of destructive radiance from its open maw. Over 200mm long, the Chardalyn Dragon is an excellent addition to your miniatures collection. Sculpted with highly detailed features and using premium paints, it is an incredible addition to your adventure in Icewind Dale!”

I see this amazing dragon as a forge dragon with those inner fires. The outer layer could actually be armor built on it to provide more protection giving you a tougher dragon or maybe because the dragon was afflicted with a disease that weakened the dragon’s scales. There are loads more ideas so you can get lots of use from your Chardalyn Dragon over the many types of games you can run.

The blind box purchases are jam packed with a variety of minis. This one has over 40 options including variants again. There are seven huge figures in the set including a yeti, a killer whale, a frost salamander, some giants and let us not forget the young adult white dragon. This one is a beast with removable wings, mainly so it can fit in the box. So if you are angling for those big minis make sure you feel the weight on them first.

The rare and huge Tomb Tapper along with Flind Trapper, Night Hag and terrifying Tekeli-Li the Gnoll Vampire are just a handful of the awesome collection of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden miniatures from WizKids.

Miniatures for many occasions

If my math is correct there are five large minis including a snowy owlbear. It is always a nice addition to see some variants on those typical D&D monsters. We also see a reindeer, a winter wolf, a crag cat and a goliath werebear. Because we all know werebears are bad ass. Some of the more notable figures to me are the gnome ceramorph. Come on — who does not think a gnome size illithid is adorable? Maybe they have brainwashed me or maybe they just are adorable but I love this figure and cannot have enough of them. The same goes for the yeti tyke. Seeing the size of the tyke versus the adult means  some players are going to have a major problem on their hands. Find out more about the new monsters lurking in Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden from our coverage here.

But we are also going to get a handful of minis falling into the realm of it could be a player character or it could be a bad guy with orcs, goblins, kobolds and even a duergar as well as others. I feel this is a strong set and I need to get more of them. Some will be to add to the collection while others will be there for use when my own game gets to the arctic, whenever this will be.
