The Wardlings – New Miniature line by WizKidz

Kickstarter Korner for Feb. 2018, Week 1
Worldbuilding: The Soul of D&D Cities

WizKidz is excited to announce the Wardlings – a new line of miniatures coming on the market with a planned release for February/March 2018. The WizKidz website says February but I have heard from their marketing team they will most likely release series 1 in March with a planned series 2 to follow in June.

The fledgling adventurers that are a part of the Wardlings product line have a magical ability to see their animal companions, a trait of which only children are capable. These adventurers also gain their powers and abilities at a young age, allowing them to defeat the evil creatures in their world. Their powers, however, are fleeting. As the children grow, they begin to lose their powers over time. When they enter adulthood, most forget they ever adventured in the first place as everyday responsibilities take hold.

The miniatures make the game

There are no rules as of yet to use these awesome miniatures in their own game but I am certain intelligent players will find or create rule sets to use these awesome minis. Series 1 Wardlings, which I am happy to say I was entrusted in getting a set of, are really cool. It is 6 child characters and 6 animal companions. From the moment I saw them, ideas had already started flowing through my mind of how I might use them.

Wardlings Series 2 I am told is going to take series one and flip the gender on the different classes and introduce 6 new companions. In Series 1, you have girl rogue with badger, girl wizard with genie, girl ranger with lynx, boy druid with tree companion, boy cleric with winged snake, and lastly boy fighter with battle dog.

It is a good mix of character and companion miniatures, and I will not lie, the tree companion is by far my favorite. The suggested retail price on the Wardling figures looks like it is going to be around $8 and that gets you one kid and one companion. The great thing is they are not blind purchase so the one you want you can just buy. They are also pre-painted and table ready. I love the idea of being able to walk into the store and buy the one you want without having to hunt through boxes and boxes to find that one mini eluding you.

Using Wardlings in your game

As I stated there are no rules to use for these, so what to do with them? First and foremost they make great gnomes or halflings miniatures for D&D and over the years those races have not had a lot of detailed minis like these are. Secondly you also get the animal companion miniatures. These make great familiars or animal companion if you are looking to do something different. You can use them of course as new monsters and low level critters or really flip your players on their heads. Put one of these tiny minis on the table as their enemy and have it be really powerful.

But what else could be done with these if you did not want to just use them in a basic D&D game? Monte Cook Games has a game called No Thank You Evil. It is an RPG specifically designed for young kids to get into gaming. These would make excellent sources for miniatures for that. Failing that you could take the Pokemon craze into the world of RPGs and make a game where you as kids find and train these companions to do battle. You could move in another direction. The kids and companions could be normal but when they find each other they unlock power within each other and you treat the couple as one character similar to the beast companion ranger. I am sure there are many other ideas that can be used as well.

The question remains for you, are you excited about these awesome minis as I am? Don’t forget to go check out the WizKidz website and the gallery of these new Wardlings miniatures.
