Adding Detail into the RPG Experience

D&D Beyond Updates, Cyber Monday Sales and Adam Bradford Live Chat
Flavour Shots: Demon Portals

My friends and I were discussing what it is that makes the great memories of the gaming table different than the mundane. What it is that makes the Game Master and players play off of one another to amazing results. What we realized is every time the game reached those truly epic levels, it was because those involved went above and beyond to describe their game, character, or scene.

They brought it to life by showing what excited them, the vision in their head, and everything in between. It could be acting it out in voice or demeanor, the little details they describe, or even a prop or reference they brought to the table to bring it to life. The fact is, details are what separate the amateurs from the legends. From Stephen King to Tom Hardy, great roles are brought to life by those who think of the little things. Did you know in the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Raphael has kanji on his shell translating roughly to “Mikey was here.” Details, plain and simple, bring the character to life.

To the purpose of discussing details, I pulled up one of my favorite games that takes detail in its art, lore, and systems to a new level. Spend an hour with me to discuss the ins and outs of various details you could use in your game. In the video my friend Avery and I even briefly go over past editions. From weapons, to worlds, classes to clothes, we go over everything in between. We will discuss ways to use detail, why you should, and how you can go about it. Also, there is a kaiju and puppy involved. So enjoy!

Please leave a comment below or on Facebook as to your interest in seeing Dan Dillon bringing more of previous Dungeons & Dragons editions’ options to fifth edition. I know I would love to see it happen. Genies Great & Small: 21 New Genies of Zakhara whisks adventurers back to the Land of Fate with a selection of genies inspired by the Al-Qadim setting. What else would you like to see?
