Hall of Distinction for Famous Wizards

Harry Dresdenharry-dresden Famous Wizards of Distinction | The Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users – “a special Halloween tribute to the birthday boy himself, Harry, a wizard of the White Council. For those of you who have never read The Dresden Files, don’t panic.  I barely discuss anything from the first book so no worries, no spoilers.”

Bigby – “When I said Bigby was not the kind of guy to get his own hands dirty- I meant his physical hands. From force hands and ballista bolts to complex force engines of destruction, Bigby knows his way around forces.”

Drawmij – “Many of Drawmij’s choices and spells point to a man who has done a lot of adventuring and is still alive because when he gets into a tight spot he has the spells and know how to get himself removed from said spot while still breathing.”

Tenser – “While his attitude is of a Lawful Good extremist his spells speak of a man more of the Lawful Badass variety. Like a one man biker gang for Goodness and Truth, Tenser’s spells are mostly built towards spotting evil doers, chasing them , and then beating them down – one man army style.”

Otiluke – “He reminds me of the mad scientist archetype. A spatially minded siege alchemist of sorts who’s wisdom score reflects a child like level of understanding of consequences.”

Leomund – “While many people see wizards as the class of blasting and explosions they can also be a class that provides a lot of support, outside of the battlefield, by way of making an adventure’s life a bit easier. Leomund ‘s spells reflect a magic user interested in the latter.”

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users – Harry Dresden

Greetings my fellow Nerdarchists. From time to time I highlight famous wizards of distinction by delving into the backgrounds and spells of magic users.

Having already completed articles on Leomund- the nerdy prepper, Tenser- the One Man Army for Goodness, Drawmij the Mysterious Traveler, and Otiluke- the Siege Alchemist, I now turn my attention to a very Famous Wizard of Distinction, Harry

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users - Harry Dresden… Dresden.

Yes, this Halloween it is a special tribute to the birthday boy himself, Harry Dresden, a wizard of the White Council.

For those of you who have never read The Dresden Files, don’t panic.  I barely discuss anything from the first book so no worries, no spoilers.

Harry Dresden is a very tall (about six and a half feet), thin man with dark hair and dark eyes.

His dialogue is generously sprinkled with puns and cultural references. His personality can go from witty man to chivalrous neanderthal when people that he wants to protect are threatened.

He is the wizard underdog protecting the supernaturally impaired underdogs in Chicago.

Harry Dresden, a Famous Wizard of Distinction, is the most famous wizard in Chicago. He also happens to be the only wizard listed in Chicago.

The man is listed in the phone book under “Wizard”. While he gets prank calls he also gets some clients who are truly in need (at least one per story).

Wait. Back up. He still uses the phone book?  Yes. Dresden does because he really doesn’t have a choice in the matter. Here is why.

Wizards in Jim Butcher’s Alternate Chicago at Harry’s level of power can’t reliably use technology. Mortals are inherently erratic and their magic interferes with complex machines.

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users - Harry Dresden computer fireIt is akin to a tell. If you notice that the computers in the office are turning off and smoking there could be a power surge, a powerful wizard close by, or both.

<— Okay maybe with less fire and more smoke but you get the idea.

So no cell phones, computers, credit cards. Not even a cordless phone. As a famous wizard in a modern fantasy setting Harry Dresden gets the raw deal by being banned from using technology by the universe.

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users – Harry Dresden’s Spell List

Spells in the Dresden Universe are not as clear cut as spells in a system like Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. The wizards make up their own spells, each individual having their own flair and lingo to go along with it.

For example, a fire spell could look like a dagger, a snake, a laser beam, really anything. It really depends on the wizard’s aptitude and inclination. The verbal component is not a necessity to do magic but it helps stabilize a wizard’s spells.

Similar to a focus tool to assist with spells. Harry tends to use pseudo- Latin phrases and words for his spells and he is usually very direct with his tactics.

This is his customized spell list mostly from the first book, Storm Front.

  • vento riflittum reflects a projectile attack
  • ventas fulmino funnels lightning through the caster to a target
  • veni che a sort of wind-based levitation

The pattern in his spells with the prefix  “ven-” is that they all deal with forces; reflecting, funneling, lifting of forces (including unseen wind). The next set of spells is Harry Dresden’s go to list when he wants to stop supernatural nastiness from getting a hold of him or the people he tries to protects.

  • Fuego- (focused with blasting rod)- a blazing lance of fire
  • Forzare- a directed force push
  • ventas/vento servitas- a strong summoned wind

The following spells show his versatility

  • voce, voco, vocius allows long distance communication when used with a special obsidian stone and a circle
  • stregallum finitas dismisses the sending of another caster
  • segui votro testatum a tracking spell
  • pulitas cleaning spell that animates brooms for sweeping

Last on the spell list but the most used

  • flickum bicus- a low powered fire generating spell used for lighting candles and fireplaces

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users - Harry DresdenFamous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users – Harry Dresden

I had a lot of trouble with this article since I have listened to the audio books and read the series several times all the way through to the current book.

I say the current book because it doesn’t matter which one Jim Butcher is up to currently since I will read it/ listen to it within a few days of the book’s release.

Also, I did not want to spoil what happens down the line for new readers. So, anyone who has read further than the first book will say that Harry Dresden is much more powerful as a magic user and has a lot more spells than I discuss here.

They would be right. And if they know that then they can wait for further spell reviews to come later.

Also, I want to do a shout out to Goblinerd on Youtube for requesting Harry Dresden for my Famous Wizards of Distinction segment. I didn’t do anything with converting him to Dungeons and Dragons rules because I want to do it right and that goes way beyond the scope of this post.

Aside from the scope I was feeling very conflicted over his class, his specialty, and his background.

I will update this post with further Harry Dresden related FWD discussions as well as links to Harry Dresden converted over to D&D 5th Edition if it is requested. Let me know what you think, comment, join us on subreddit- How to Stay Nerdy, join us on youtube.

(Author note: For style points I have scheduled this to publish at sunrise on Halloween.)

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users – Tenser

Greetings my fellow Nerdarchists. In the weeks and months to come I am going to highlight famous wizards of distinction by delving into the backgrounds and spells of magic users . I have already completed articles on Leomund, the nerdy prepper and Otiluke the Siege Alchemist. Now I am turning my thoughts towards Tenser.

Famous Wizards of Distinction: Backgrounds and Spells of Magic Users - TenserWhy Tenser? Why now? Well I chose him by accessing my on board bio-computer with search parameters of “whomever I feel like”. It spit back Tenser for an answer.

Without any input to the contrary I will be focusing on famous wizards of distinction from RPGs but that does not mean I am excluding the backgrounds and spells of magic users from books, movies, and comics. I know. I know. Nate the Nerdarch, friend to the lazy nerd and researcher extraordinaire!

The only order I will be following is the “whomever I feel like writing about” order. Unless there are some famous wizards you want to hear about next. If there is a wizard you like that you think is one of  the famous wizards of distinction then please comment below and let me know who you want to read about next. (Update: Otiluke is next check him out here)

I will be focusing on famous wizards of distinction from RPGs but that does not mean I am excluding the backgrounds and spells of magic users from books, movies, and comics. Give me a compelling example of wizardry and I will write it up.
