GeekGirlCon ’17 – A Convention to Celebrate the Female Geek

GeekGirlCon ’17

All right, so many things have occurred in the last decade of geekdom, and one I am very proud to be witness to is the massive expansion of acceptance for geeks from the general public. The thing is, many think the fight is already won, but it is not a battle. Indeed this is a war being battled on many fronts. There is a war of sorts women, people of color, nonbinary genders, and people of all sexual orientations have been fighting. One for safety and acceptance, to proper representation, and even employment. Continue reading GeekGirlCon ’17 – A Convention to Celebrate the Female Geek

Super Nerd Skills | Looking for some Nerdy Articles

I have not written about Super Nerd Skills for several months and I was missing it.

So I decided to reminisce by revisiting some of my nerdy articles from back in the day.

For your and my convenience I am putting a few short excerpts from each of them so we may easily go from one to the other within a single web page.

1. One of my favorite nerd skills: ARMA “a.k.a. the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts and the swordsmanship that they practice. Now before we go on lets clarify a few points on how this is a super nerdy skill. First, martial arts, is a system of combat skills used for defense, fighting, strengthening, etc…

Hmmm doesn’t sound too nerdy, sounds kind of buff. I believe the second part will clarify how it fits into Super Nerd Skills…”

2. If you don’t know what parkour is or what a traceur does then you really should check out this nerdy article  about running and jumping in cosplay attire…

“While most people see that as ridiculous, practiced parkour traceurs (people who practice parkour) see it as the best way to go. If you were free running you may throw a few back flips and spins into the traversal.

So parkour traceurs travel quick and efficient while free running runners are “free” to make it as an ascetically pleasing event as they desire.”

3. Blazing fast reading speeds part 1 and part 2.

Part 1 excerpt: “Learning how to read faster than the nerd average has been the desire of  many who look at their “to be read” stack of books and realize that the stack is no longer there because it fell down last year and they decided to get a book shelf for their “to be read” queue…”

Part 2 excerpt: “The app would chunk the following example sentence to increase reading speed, “the dwarf struck the orc with an axe and it fell” would be broken up into chucked phrases, “The Dwarf”, “Struck the orc”, “with an axe”, “and it fell”.

This allows for you to follow the flow of the sentence and gives you more time to decipher the literary symbols that matter for reading comprehension.”

4. Renaissance man and author of Fantasy Books.

flint knapping Super Nerd Skills | Looking for some Nerdy Articles“Imagine you are an author and writing a book where a main character interacts with indigenous people who use stone weapons.

Would it be better to simply state that some of them where flint knapping or would it add a fantastic level of realism to describe what the character is witnessing so that the reader can construct an image in their mind of what is happening around him?”

5. BLR. First the review of the Super Nerd Skill that was used: “Lip Reading a.k.a. Speechreading

Lip reading is a nerdy skill that can be developed by interpreting the communicative movements of the mouth, lips, and face. It is technical, as in it is very specific knowledge dealing with language, akin to sign language. Read as = Nerd Skill

Super Nerd Skills | Bad Lip Reading and Medieval Land Fun Time WorldEven more than the written word, lip reading has a host of difficulties with misinterpretations.

Lip reading is limited, in that many sounds have the same visual cues, so it is not easy to distinguish the words spoken based on the visual information by itself.

Also a sound that is “spoken” from the throat or deeper inside the mouth is unable to be detected.”

Super Nerd Skills | Looking for some Nerdy Articles

These were some of my favorite articles to research and write because it is very encouraging when I see other people flying the nerd flag and staying nerdy!

Do you think you know or have heard of a super nerd skill that I have yet to talk about?

Can you type the correct series of letters and spaces to tell me in the comments below?

If you said yes to the last two questions do your fellow nerdarchists a favor by telling us, in the comments below, about a super nerd skill.

I would say my manner, skill sets, and subject knowledge are incongruous but they all seem to find a home under the umbrella term of nerd. I have a passion for studying science, religion, art, games, crafting, wine/beer-crafting, sustainable living, and green chemistry. I really enjoy gaming with friends and writing about my experiences as a nerd.

How To Speeks Goblin| Cosplay

cosplay

This week we explore our happy little goblin taking part in a recreational activity, cosplay. What might a goblin like to cosplay as you might ask. Well perhaps a dwarf, a halfling, a gnome, or even a happy little elf like this fella. Not only is he going for the difficult elf cosplay, but the gender bender elf at that. Props to this guy for giving it his all.

As always you know what to do if you have a great idea for a weekly webcomic for our little green friends. Just drop it into the comments section below and if we deem it worthy it’ll be immortalized on the Nerdarchy website for all to see and of course we’ll make sure the genius behind goblins get full credit for the idea.
