Star Wars The Force Awakens – Beginner Game Review – More in the Box than You think

Titanic Miniatures for your Tabletop Roleplaying Game
Heroforge - Custom Miniatures for your Tabletop RPG

Hello fellow Nerdarchist and Star Wars enthusiasts.  It is ground breaking time here at Nerdarchy.  We swr09_sample2have been blessed with getting an advanced copy of the Force Awakens beginner game from Fantasy Flight games.  It is not even available to pre-order and we already have our copy.  This is a first to get a review copy from a major publishing house like Fantasy Flight Games, so a big Thank you to them.

Dave and I each have our own copies of each of the other box sets.  You can check out the reviews I did on them here: Star Wars Edge of the Empire beginner game, Star Wars Age of Rebellion beginner game & Star Wars Force and Destiny beginner game.

Taken from the website:

Enjoy all-new adventures in the Star Wars universe with The Force Awakens™ Beginner Game!

The perfect entry into the Star Wars roleplaying experience for players of all skill levels, The Force Awakens Beginner Game introduces a complete, learn-as-you-go adventure that carries you from the sands of Jakku deep into the heart of a mystery that could change the course of the galaxy.

Note: Unlike our other Beginner Games, The Force Awakens Beginner Game will not be followed by a new Star Wars RPG game line. Instead, it draws upon the core mechanics shared by Star Wars®: Age of Rebellion, Star Wars®: Edge of the Empire, and Star Wars®: Force and Destiny. Players interested in continuing their Star Wars adventures can do so through any of these fully compatible systems.

You don’t need any previous knowledge of roleplaying to get started. Just open the box, select your character, and let the Force flow through you. Pre-generated character folios keep the rules right at your fingertips, while custom dice and an exciting narrative gameplay system advance your story with every roll.

Set during the rule of the New Republic and just prior to the events of The Force Awakens, The Force The Force AwakensAwakens Beginner Game contains everything three to five players need to play their parts part in the struggle between the First Order and the Resistance.

In the box you get all the usual stuff that was in the other boxes.  The box has a retail value listed at $29.95 with Amazon usually knocking this down to between $18-$25 depending on their current deal.  With the set of dice having a retail value by itself of $15 the box sets are a steal.

You again get the standard set of cardboard pawn that are tailored to the adventure you are about to play, but remember that this adds to the sets you already have so you get some useful pieces that you can use over and over again as you play in this wonderful universe.

You of course get 4 character profile sheets set up for characters to play in the starter adventure. You get three humans and an abednedo.  The race: Adebnedo came out in Shattered Empire part IV and is in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens the Visual Dictionary.  All the classes are from Age of Rebellion and Edge of the Empire because the story takes place in a time when the Jedi are practically non-existent.

The explorer and colonist are classes from Edge of the Empire and ace and soldier are from Age of Star WarsRebellion.  These great character profiles are very useful not only as starter characters complete with an easy leveling guide and back story, but you can use them as NPCs for your game and even level them up along with your players as the game progresses.

It would not be a beginner game unless it came with a prepared adventure.  So you get two books the adventure book as well as the beginner rulebook.  The books are easy to read and follow so that even a novice to a roleplaying game will be able to follow and understand.

There is also a map like the other beginner games which folds out into multiple locations.  This time you get a hanger bay and a wreckage site.  On the flip side is a complete stellar map of the Star Wars universe.

The last two items of note within the box is the Read this First pamphlet.  It is a guide to help those who have never roleplayed before.  It asks the questions and answers them: What is a Roleplaying Game?  Who are the players? and to top it off if gives you the starting scraw that accompanies every star wars movie which I feel just adds so much more class.  Lastly you get a sheet of information to let you know that it is not the end of the material or adventure.  On the website, just like the other beginner games, the story continues with another adventure.  The other beginner games also had 2 other character profiles I wonder if this one will as well.

Well that about covers this one.  I hope you like the Star Wars Roleplaying Game as much as I do.  Make sure you pick up your copy of The Force Awakens beginner game when it comes out.

Remember, Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy!
