RPG Character Creation: Unveiling the Psyche through D&D

The Name Game, Part III: Last Names, Titles and Sobriquets
Sourcebook Review: Recovery Dice Options

The first thing we do when playing Dungeons & Dragons is character creation. Without the characters, there is no story; we know this. In order to create a character we must first decide which character to make, why that character, and then the details. In order to do this we have a great opportunity to take clay and make a mold out of our own ideas and desires. You may have heard that the way a person views  life, people and situations is based off his or hers own experiences? Well, this is one of those times where we get to use all the tools life has given us and make something with it. Once we take hold of this art form, the opportunities for character building and world building take off. Each character creation has its own unique flare and destiny that drives the adventure to its perfect and final crescendo.

The real question to all of this is “why?” Why are we all so fascinated with character creation? With creating other worlds outside of our own and then storming into them with the possibilities of death, torture or terrifying beasts of magic waiting to crunch our bones? The reason we do all of this roll play and dice tossing is because within these games, we learn a great deal about ourselves. We see what others might do in similar situations, and we might mimic some things while ignoring others; we use what we relate, too, and then we “storm our own psyches” to fill in the rest.

D&DRoll playing might be something that saves your life due to the fact you created this expression from inside, and you were then able to roll play those feelings, emotions, urges or whatever it may be. Making a creation and playing it is important for our mental advancement in so many different ways. Allowing yourself freedom in creativity is the first part in opening the gates of the mind to explore. When we can transcend the barriers of thought, time and memory, we can unharness our innermost selves to bring more life into each game and into each new day. It takes honesty, courage, and vulnerability to say, “this is apart of me, and I share it now with you.”

D&DWhen we can come together as unique individuals from unique backgrounds and past experiences, our games become enriched with culture, diversity, and color.  I love when someone expresses the world they are in and really just uses vibrant, communicative words to describe color, smells or any other scent that might carry you away into that person’s mind. Don’t be afraid to be different, weird or quirky in the way you play, because more times than not, your party is going to love seeing through your eyes and your life as you express yourself.

Each character creation says something about each player and it makes dungeoning all the more interesting when people can be honest with their own play style.

So, if you want to play D&D, maybe ask yourself, why? Whatever answer you come up with, be okay with that answer. Keep playing, keep rolling, keep creating, keep understanding more about yourself and about the vast spaces and regions of the mind and of the fantasy world.
