New 5E D&D Feats for the Goatfolk

D&D Party Composition -- Playing an All Warlock Party
Madness in 5E D&D

When we revamped Nerdarchy the Patreon, revising our monthly rewards was one of the most exciting parts of the process. For Patreon supporters this meant they’d receive the entirety of the rewards package with new Fifth Edition content ready to drop right into your game, at the lowest tier. Previously, supporters at the $3 level received the Mage Forge supplement with new magic items. But for the past couple of years now we send the entire digital product — 15-30 pages with full color art — to all supporters at the $3 level and above. Order of the Wizened was one of the earliest revised rewards packages. I take particular pride in that one since I had free reign to create the content from soup to nuts. Since then we’ve created a ton of content for Patreon supporters, and these products eventually make their way to Nerdarchy the Store. With the content available to everyone now, we thought it would be fun to revisit these earlier products and create some enhanced content for them right here on the site. So let’s get into it and create some special new feats for 5E D&D.

Goatfolk in 5E D&D

From a secret stronghold carefully concealed high in the mountains, the Order of the Wizened guard vast repositories of ancient knowledge.
Cursed by Baphomet for stubborn refusal of its gifts the Oreamnos, or goatfolk, now act as guardians against the Horned King’s return to the world. These sentinels of civilization are ever watchful for agents of the Labyrinth, devotees of the demon lord ever plotting to reach the secluded stronghold and seize the knowledge within. And they need the help of heroes! Order of the Wizened includes:

  • New Player Character Race: Oreamnos (goatfolk)
  • New Background
  • New Organization
  • 8 New Magic Items
  • 2 New Creatures including the Spell-Eater Minotaur
  • Koobur’s Lair Adventure for 4-6 characters of 6th-8th level

5E D&D feats goatfolkIn the book, goatfolk are described as stubborn and willful keepers of knowledge with a cursed origin. They gain a bonus to Wisdom and Constitution, and their Bookcunning, Natural Climber, Oreamnos Resistance and Surefoooted features make them excellent researchers and explorers.

Looking at other 5E D&D feats with racial prerequisites some features include ability score bonuses, a cantrip and spells up to 3rd level (in some cases enhanced by spending Hit Dice), increased speed, skill proficiencies, rerolls for yourself or others on attack rolls, ability checks and saving throws, extra damage and AC, damage resistances and imposing the frightened condition are a few examples.

I like how the racial D&D feats offer a way for characters to double down on their race choice. These feats illustrate core aspects of the race, and help players portray their characters as a idealized member of their race. Incidentally, racial D&D feats help Dungeon Masters too. You can take an NPC stat block like cult fanatic, guard, archmage or noble, apply these feats, and reflavor them to suit your needs. Apprentice wizard is a workhorse stat block, a suitable foe for low level adventurers. Add the Flames of Phlegethos feat on top and now you’ve got tiefling apprentice wizards who can reroll damage dice on fire spells and whenever they cast their firebolt or burning hands, flames wreathe them and cause damage to anyone who hits them with a melee attack.

With those things in mind here’s three new 5E D&D feats for goatfolk. But of course feel free to use them however you like in your game. They could be available to any player character, or if you’re the DM maybe you’ll add the features from these feats to an existing stat block to give it that goatfolk feel.

Goatfolk Duty

Prerequisite: Oreamnos (goatfolk)

You take the vow of your people to protect knowledge and maintain the secret path to Maktaba Hold as a solemn oath. You learn the alarm, fog cloud, and pass without trace spells, each of which you can cast once without expending a spell slot. You regain the ability to cast these three spells in this way when you finish a long rest. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for all three spells.

Horned King’s Blood

Prerequisite: Oreamnos (goatfolk)

Baphomet’s curse affects you even moreso than your brethren and your horns grow thick, dense and strong. Your horns are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal bludgeoning damage equal to 1d6 + your Strength modifier, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

In addition while you have 10 hit points or fewer, you have advantage on attack rolls.

Mountain Born and Bred

Traversing your mountainous homeland is not only easy for you, it’s fun! You gain the following benefits:

  • Increase your Constitution score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
  • You gain a climbing speed of 20 feet.
  • You gain expertise the Athletics skill, which means your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make with it.

There you have it, three new 5E D&D feats for goatfolk, found inside Order of the Wizened. These could certainly be used for characters of other races in D&D too. Goliaths might find Mountain Born and Bred compliments their abilities nicely, and perhaps a tiefling with Horned King’s Blood opens up avenues to interesting character builds. Goatfolk Duty offers an array of options for stealth and security any character could find advantageous.

If you’re interested in seeing more about the goatfolk, checking out new magic items or looking for a labyrinth adventure complete with demonic cult organization for your 5E D&D campaign, check out Order of the Wizened in Nerdarchy the Store and let us know what you think in the comments below.
