Nerdarchy at Philcon 2016 - Panel Synopsis - Doctor Who Next

Panel Date – November 19, 2016

Attendance – Approximately 25 Television and Movie Fans

Convention Detail Philcon is a small Science Writer and Reader Convention that occurs in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in November each year. In recent years, the convention has expanded to include a robust anime track and a cosplay track.

Panel Premise – From Philcon Program “The last two years have seen many continuations (as opposed to reboots) of long-silent properties – not just big franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek, but things like the X-files, Twin Peaks, Heroes, Red Dwarf, Mad Max, and MST3K. Which are marching in the same spirit as the original content, which hold up as heirs despite a shift in focus or style, and which should never have been green-lit?”

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE Philcon PANEL (Synopsis of the Content the Presenter Covered)

Stuart Hellinger (Moderator, Aided in the establishment of the early 1970s New York City Star Trek Conventions) – There are a large number of these second chance shots (being rebooted or reborn) – Twin Peaks, Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Starship Troopers, Longmire The new Star Trek television show is supposed to start shooting in January 2017 but no real casting has been done; the show could easily fail because of mass audience lacks imagination and education and historically smart content has a limited audience Failed reboots; Heroes, Twilight Zone, Rush Hour, Minority Report Mystery Science Theater reboot should be easy to do, the bar is low Odd couple is rolling but the actors are simply not Felix and Oscar Westworld, spent a lot of time in Development Hell Macgyver is pulling in ratings, but the new guy does not exude personality and the show does not have the silly fun vibe of the original Stranger in a Strange Land; David Gerrold wrote a fantastic screen treatment that was not used because the Seagram’s heir Matthew Bronfman  swooped in and bought an option on the screen rights Want a continuation of Firefly

Kathy Sands (Ran a Science Fiction Bookstore for two decades, Previously the Social Secretary for the Baltimore Science Fiction Society) – Class, a reboot of the Doctor Who spinoff Sarah Jane Adventure looks promising Aftermash, when they took Klinger out of the dress it was just not the same

Elyse Rosenstein (New York Science Fiction Society, Aided in the establishment of the early 1970s New York City Star Trek Conventions) – Hawaii Five-0, a strong, lasting reboot; used the same elements in the theme song and overall captured the spirit of the original Perry Mason, original show was unquestionably great but the reboot used actors with completely different hair colors and it failed (partly because many fans care about small details such as these) Macgyver, show-runners missed the point of the original, his key ambition was to help people Farscape had a truly unique situation, a second ending (The Peacekeeper Wars) brought about by fans who were upset with Syfy’s original series ending Want a reboot of My Favorite Martian

General – Audience called out additional reboots that worked (Alien Nation, Stargate) and reboots that are hoped for (The Pretender, Quantum Leap, Highlander, Dark Angel)

GARIBAY CLOSING NOTES

Wonderful panel. Moderator was on point and the presenters were engaged. My personal favorite reboot for 2016 was Voltron: Legendary Defender and the reboot I would most like to see is Star Blazers.
