Kickstarter Korner for September 2018, Week 4
Each week during the Quests & Adventures live chat, Saturday at 2 p.m. eastern, Nerdarchists Dave and Ted and Nate the Nerdarch hang out live with fans from the Nerdarchy YouTube channel. It’s a chance to share announcements and news, answer questions from the live chat and generally just hang out and talk nerdy with the Nerdarchy community.
In the description of each weekly video, Nerdarchist Ted compiles a list and links to all the videos and website content from the week. But he also shares a selection of cool Kickstarter campaigns. As an avid Kickstarter supporter, he’s happy to share his favorite RPG and gaming-related Kickstarters with you, the Nerdarchy community. Enjoy!

Protip: There are days when even the normally cheery Nerditor Doug gets overwhelmed, buried in projects and barely keeps all those plates spinning, leading down a road of wondering what in the heck I’m doing. Being an editor in any industry is not the flashiest gig by a long shot whether it’s my muggle job as a newspaper editor and designer or the work I do with Nerdarchy and various other clients for RPG-related projects. Finding time to explore my own creative pursuits and still keeping a little time to unwind and relax ain’t easy! So I was very encouraged earlier today when I saw this tweet from Mike Mearls:
Great illustration of how in tabletop design, editing is a critical part of implementation that runs far deeper than copy editing. Tabletop editors are game designers. https://t.co/wKwt4qBytp
— Mike Mearls (@mikemearls) September 29, 2018
Among other creators in both the game design and journalism businesses — the ones I’m familiar with — editors are recognized for the impact we have on any project or product, but outside of that it’s one of those roles where generally people only notice when you mess up. This scenario, along with those moments I lament having so little time to create my own original stuff, can really lead to some doldrums. That’s why I was so excited to see Mearls’ statement that tabletop editors are game designers too. I hadn’t thought about it like that before, but damn right! I can’t tell you how much I’ve simultaneously learned and contributed to the final outcome of people’s work. I mean, it’s basically what I do 40 hours a week to pay the bills and then a whole bunch of other hours each week to…maybe pay the bills? Someday?
If there’s a protip in here somewhere (because there should be right?) it’s this: just because something you work on or become a part of didn’t begin with your own original idea doesn’t mean you’re not bringing something vital to the table. If we’re talking RPGs, the players contribute just as much or more than a Game Master (especially if you consider it collectively). At our jobs, we might be working for someone else’s company but we’re sharing our individual skills and talents to keep everything running. And if we’re editors, we’re down there in the trenches right alongside the writers, artists and other creative types offering guidance, insights and input both technical and practical.
The next time you’re checking out a favorite RPG book or flipping through the newest release from your favorite publisher, take a moment and look over the credits to see who the editor is. I bet if you compare several of your favorite books, you might discover familiar names in them!
