Kickstarter Korner for October 2018, Week 1

D&D Campaign Settings -- Eberron has Come to Adventurers League and 5E
5E D&D Monsters Become BFFs and Adventurers Pay the Price

Each week during the Quests & Adventures live chat, Saturday at 2 p.m. eastern, Nerdarchists Dave and Ted and Nate the Nerdarch hang out live with fans from the Nerdarchy YouTube channel. It’s a chance to share announcements and news, answer questions from the live chat and generally just hang out and talk nerdy with the Nerdarchy community.

In the description of each weekly video, Nerdarchist Ted compiles a list and links to all the videos and website content from the week. But he also shares a selection of cool Kickstarter campaigns. As an avid Kickstarter supporter, he’s happy to share his favorite RPG and gaming-related Kickstarters with you, the Nerdarchy community. Enjoy!

Protip: If you are a Dungeons & Dragons players, or any other roleplaying game, and haven’t run your own adventure yet…why not? I’m here to tell you, it’s not that hard to be a Game Master. People may disagree with me here, and that’s okay. I’m not saying it’s an effortless endeavor, or anyone who sits behind the screen runs a perfect game every time. Far from it.

My point is within a group of fun-seeking individuals looking to collaborate together to tell a great story of adventure, being a GM is not a Herculean task. Come up with a hook (I recommend the 5 W’s approach) or create a small dungeon and you’re almost all the way there already. Even simpler, grab a published adventure and dive right in. One of my favorite things about old school D&D modules was the simple set up. The Dungeon Master reads some background text about the region and the reason for the quest, and explains to the players their characters are at the dungeon entrance.

“What do you do?”

That question there is a powerful tool in a GM’s arsenal. It’s shorthand for passing the ball to the players, whether it’s to help paint a scene, indicate it’s their turn to steer the ship, or just give yourself a moment to think by putting the action in the players hands.

It’s probably due to being older and growing up playing RPGs when there was no internet or huge community of easily-accessible fellow gamers to connect with, so it’s a little odd when I see folks asking questions like, their GM couldn’t make it to a session — what do we do? Or they want to start playing D&D and running their own game — how do they do it?

Us GMs don’t have any mystical powers of game mastery. And the best game sessions have as much or more to do with the players. In the Quests & Adventures chat below, quite a few people in chat (and there were a lot in the chat that day) shared stories of their own GM experiences including more than a couple people who ran their first games recently. I love hearing that! Being a GM means you can explore your own creative ideas and share them with other players, providing the same kinds of awesome experiences you have as a player in someone else’s games.

So get out there and run some games! If you’ve never been a GM before, pick up a published adventure, or make one up yourself, or even roll up a random adventure. The fifth edition D&D Dungeon Master’s Guide has a bunch of tables and charts for creating all sorts of adventures, dungeons, NPCs and more. And while you’re doing all of that, or course, stay nerdy.
