Nerdarchist Ted here to expand upon the lovely post written by Steven about the vulpin, a foxfolk race for fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons right on our site here. I think this is a great start and I wanted to expand upon it by making a new racial feat available for the foxfolk race that captures some of the Japanese folklore about the mythical figures called kitsune. And for Dungeon Masters out there I’ve included a vulpin spirit caller ready to drop right into your campaign as an insightful NPC. Whether you’re a player or DM, or simply think foxfolk are really fun and cool you can create your own customized miniature and get it 3D printed — in full color — from the amazing Hero Forge.
Vulpin racial feat for 5E D&D
Increase your Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
You gain the ability to shape your body, in much the way a druid uses Wild Shape, as an action. You retain your mental capacity but your form shifts into that of a standard size fox (use badger). You can stay in this form for one hour before you resume your normal form. If you posses the Wild Shape ability you may expend a use at the duration’s end to remain in the form so you do not change back automatically. Additionally while in this form you can communicate with foxes though they still only have animal intelligence and some concepts might be beyond them.
Kitsune is a very popular concept, found in other roleplaying games like Pathfinder and the attachment to the spirit world plays a large part in the mythical folklore creature, as well as shapechanging. So included below is a vulpin spirit caller ready to drop right into your 5E D&D games.
Miyako Moriko is a vulpin, or foxfolk (she really does not care which you use) of an unknown number of years. Her eyes hold generations of depth, but her youthful appearance speaks to a vibrant physicality. She dresses in simple green and white clothes. Her eyes rarely focus on others as she appears to be gazing off into the distance, her gazed locked in the spirit world. She misses little. Perhaps the spirits reveal to her what her eyes are not focused on.
Many come to Miyako seeking advice from all around and she is happy to offer her services for what people are able to provide as payment. She reads people remarkably well and arranges the terms of service in advance. Unreasonable and unfair seekers with deception in their hearts do not recognize the value of her insight, gaining her ire and a swift refusal of service.

Spellcasting. Miyako is a 9th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). Miyako has the following cleric spells prepared:
Cantrips (at will): guidance, light, mending, spare the dying
1st level (4 slots): cure wounds, guiding bolt, protection from evil and good
2nd level (4 slots): augury, lesser restoration, zone of truth
3rd level (3 slots): bestow curse, remove curse, speak with dead
4th level (3 slots): divination, locate creature
5th level (1 slot): commune
Compact Flexibility. Miyako’s size counts as Small for determining what passages she can fit through.
Natural Traveler. Miyako always knows which direction is north. In addition, she has advantage on Survival checks to navigate.
Spirit Call. Miyako calls to the spirits for aid. A spirit shows up per her request. The spirit is not a creature but a magical effect in the form of a translucent fox. It can be directed to make an attack if Miyako uses a bonus action to command it. It has a +5 to hit and does 8 (1d8 +4) points of force damage. Miyako can only have 1 of these going at a time.
Shapechange (1/day). Miyako can turn into a fox (use badger) for 1 hour. When she does so she retains her mental stats and can communicate with any fox. She can return to her form early if she wants ending it with no action but then must wait until the next day to do so again.
Quarterstaff. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage, or 4 (1d8) bludgeoning damage when used with two hands.
Wherever Miyako goes two foxes follow her. These are a mix of natural foxes and shapeshifted allies who can come to her aid in an hour of need. Feel free to add the features from the race to any NPC and change their type to a vulpin.
