Dungeon Crate Unboxing – June 2018

Buff is the Stuff for D&D Support Characters
D&D Monstrous Races Really Miscast My Cantrips

Hello fellow gamer. Or are you also a nerdy collector? Here I get to share what’s inside the subscription box, in this case an unboxing of great stuff from our friends of at Dungeon Crate. I have been getting these since box No. 1 and I am surprised at how many Dungeon Crate boxes that is over the years. I actually saved a large number of them and have used them to store nerdy things in and the treasure chest feel is pretty cool.

June 2018 Dungeon Crate unboxing

Enough rambling. What’s in the box?

As always we go straight to the card explaining it all. And the trend continues. I mentioned last month that the card explaining what is in the box has a dungeon tile on the back. This is a smart move and I am so glad they are continuing to do so.

From the Dungeon Crate June 2018 insert:

“Summer is here and we have a fantastic crate lined up for June.  This month, we showcase new upgrades with a heavily expanded mini module, dungeon tile insert, and an additional art/terrain insert.  Venture forth with the Shady Lady Herself and enjoy a crate filled with stuff to make you feel good, shiny things to inspire you, and tiny things to adorn your gaming table.”

A Shady Situation — Man! They were not kidding about the module being bigger. It used to be on card stock and folded to make essentially a 4-page adventure.  Now it is a little booklet basically three times the size at 11 pages with fine artwork by the team over at Dungeon Doodles. The module has some new monsters and is designed for characters level 3-5.

Dungeon Crate unboxingNext out of the box is a few coins by 1980Who. I know what you are saying: more coins, but these are inspiration coins. They are nice and solid. Metal coins are great to use at the table but inspiration coins are even better. Over the years we have seen plastic inspiration tokens by Advanced Deployment and even Beardspiration tokens for use in the Nerdarchy-inspired adventure. With these you can use them as regular inspiration or mix it up. Use the metal ones to represent something special. Maybe this type of inspiration can be used to edit a scene, make a bad guy do a reroll on that crit, or maybe auto-pass a saving throw. How ever you choose to use them they are quite cool and I look forward to using them in the games I run. [NERDITOR’S NOTE: You could take a play from Mark Hulmes book during the Stream of Many Eyes and how he used tokens for the players in his Mission: Impractical one-shot.]

Are you looking for barrels of fun? You have come to the right place. Three mini barrels for use in your games are part of this Dungeon Crate. The barrels do not say where they are from but they are a cool option of something to hide behind, have in town for catching rain water or they could be barrels of ale. Put out three of them and one gets to be the mimic — who touches the wrong barrel?

Reaper Minis are next, and I can never have enough. If you watch the old cartoons of Scrooge McDuck swimming through his pile of gold coins, I want to do that but with minis. I know I am silly but maybe that is just part of my charm. Or was it my lack thereof? Anyway, in this crate we get two cool minis for use in your games. First is 77086 – Townsfolk: Strumpet. We are supposed to use this as Bonnie LaBlanc, the Shady Lady herself for the adventure. The other mini is 77154 – Lizardfolk Spearman. This mini comes ready for battle and I should know as I already have a few copies but when it comes to lizardfolk the more the merrier.  So I will clean this one up and get him joined in with the others.

The next thing I pulled out of the Dungeon Crate leaves me with a conundrum. From the Frizzy Fairy Apothecary it is a D20 bath bomb. The sticker on the package shows it is good until December 2018 and was made exclusively for Dungeon Crate. The question is do I use it and enjoy a soak in the bath, and find out what regular size d20 I get inside, or do I keep the d20 as is and see how long it lasts? [NERDITOR’S NOTE: How does soap expire and go bad?]

And the loot continues. The Lisran from Dungeon Doodles is a double-sided terrain card representing both the upper and lower levels of the ship in A Shady Situation. It’s nice how all these things are working together. With two copies you have a boat on boat attack or have the upper and lower decks of the boat out at the same time and have a bigger fight area. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.

The last physical item in this month’s crate is a new die. Continuing with the Game Science dice, this time we get a d24. I like how the collection of this line keeps going but can we get back to the normal polyhedrals please?

The last item description was a little weird because if you saw last month’s crate post there was an issue with the stock. What we were supposed to get last month was three mimic tokens and a flight stand. The flight stand is a solid three piece build to clearly show your character is not on the ground but not take up any extra space. The three mimic tokens are cool as they have a chest on one side and a nice looking mimic on the other. Easy to put the fear in the players once they know the chest could be a mimic.

The last item to talk about here is the digital Dungeon Crate. No, I am not going to share the password but if you go and look there are some nerdy kid activities such as a Spot the Difference game. There is also a pattern you can print out to do a papercraft boat.

If you want cool stuff delivered to your door each month head over to the Dungeon Crate website and sign up for a subscription box service. You can use coupon code Nerdarchy to get you 10 percent off your first month’s crate. This is our way of telling them Nerdarchy sent you.

Thanks for reading. Until next time, stay nerdy!
