5th Edition Tome of Beasts – Fey Lords and Ladies

5th Edition Tome of Beasts - Dragons
5th Edition Tome of Beasts – Arch Devils and Devils

last week we delved into the Tome of Beasts and touched on the Dragons.  Today we are going to talk tome of beastsabout the Fey Lords and Ladies. This is from the Tome of Beasts  that is coming out for 5th Edition.  You can pre-order your own copy here.  It is expected to be released on September 13th.

They divide the fey lords and ladies up into regions and tell you the power and political side of things.  if you wanted to run a game dealing with them there is the structure set up already.  Each of these mighty beings has the ability to alter the land around around them coming in with legendary actions, lair actions and regional effects.  These beings are not toppled easily and unless you have a DM set things up poorly or you set up machinations correctly you are never going to encounter them alone.

The mythological Cold Iron comes back into play with these might Fey Lords and Ladies.  There has been no previous mention, I am familiar with. There is a side bar for how to obtain them in the game but crafter beware.  These beings are powerful and live a long time.  They might kill you just for making them.  The reason cold iron is a thing as these mighty beings can’t be harmed with weapons that are not made of the stuff.  Only 2 of the Fey lords and Ladies are able to be hurt with just regular magic weapons.  The rest require you to have Cold Iron Weapons.

The current most powerful and primary leader is the Queen of Night and magic.  She is the queen and married to the Moonlit King.  Being the most powerful fey she comes packed with abilities.  One of those crazy abilities is to literally have the ability to spend her reaction and shut down any spell she sees happening at her.  She is a mighty spell-caster herself able to cast even the most powerful of spells.

Her husband, whom she banished, is the Moonlit King.  He has become quite mad, and I am not talking angry, at being isolated in his tower.  Since his banishment he has begun consorting with fiends and even has the ability to summon them to do his bidding.

The River King is next in power and he controls the lands of the river elves, a possible new subrace we will see from Kobold press?  The river king and the Queen of Night and Magic are the one who most resemble the elves I feel the others go closer to extremes.  Though we must remember that Fey Lords and Ladies are beings of supreme power and can look like anything they want.  They are not elves.  A mistake I make in the video below.  Shrouded in a cloak made of water, or so it seems, he as you would Fey lords and ladiesguess controls water and is very graceful.

The Snow Queen, looks like an Elsa knock off if you ask me.  Or perhaps just has her elevated to even more power.  She rules in the land of the arctic and only a fool would dare cross her in the lands of cold where she holds her power.  Being that she can control that cold, it is just not a good idea. She is fiercely territorial.  Her daughters wander the land killing any that do not have good reason to be there and she commands a tribe of frost giants.

The Bear king is the weakest politically, but I do not think he really cares about it.  he rules from his land where bears are more common and so are werebears.  He is in fact one of them.  Could he be the first?  In his domain the ability to become a werebear is increased as you get disadvantage on the saving throw.  I believe he is the most respectful of strength and would probably the easiest to use as a neutral character in a game.  He might hold a grudge if you damage his bees or start killing bears in his range but a good brawl might just sort things out.

The Queen of Witches is not mentioned in the power structure though I am certain she is seen as an equal by the bear king if not higher.  She towers over the other Fey Lords and ladies and even most ogres.  While the others are size medium she is actually Large.

The last of the Fey Lords and Ladies from the Tome of Beasts is actually my favorite.  That is the Lord of the Hunt.  While all of the others get full names and titles galore this one is a mystery.  It seems he is inspired by the mythological character the Erl-king talked about in legends and favored in the Book Series the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.  He is a huntsman as you would guess and if he has his own place that he truly calls home none know of it.  He makes camp and is so powerful he warps the land to his advantage.

There are some rumors that Kobold Press might make a miniature line based on the Tome of Beasts and if so the Lord of the Hunt would be a must acquire for yours truly.

I hope you like the little insight to these amazing characters that you could use as major players in your world either as quest givers to indifferent to adversaries against your party.  The Fey Lords and Ladies from the Tome of Beasts for 5th Edition.  get your copy here.

Not enough is out there on the Archfey and the Fey Lord are truly the closest to explaining how they operate.

Official material does suggest a ritual of sort being involved in becoming an arch fey that seems legitimate enough. The MTOF says something about Eladrin moving away from the rememberance and towards reincarnating through the forces of the Feywild.

It seems that there are 2 ways an Archfey is borne, one is through the Feywild’s magic and the other is through Arborea’s reincarnation mechanism. It seems Elves or at least Eladrin have the ability to mix those things… probably.

I could imagine a ritual could be used with the detailed requirements met to force the issue but it would probably have to involve Wish at some level as the spell reincarnation wasn’t made for this.

The guests of Arborea also do not resemble their old selves and even an Orc would resemble an Elf there, though more of the Eladrin variety in shape but not with the seasonal changes.

    Feywild really is interesting.

I could imagine epic level content involving champion players or demi-god hood and archfeys working together against multiverse shattering opponents.
