3 New Cantrips for D&D Inspired by The Mis-Adventurers: An (Almost) Epic Tale

D&D Ideas -- Scaling Encounters
A Legion of Monsters and Heroes with Pathfinder Battles: Ruins of Lastwall Miniatures

The Mis-Adventurers: An (Almost) Epic Tale is a new adult comedic fantasy adventure novel that hits a lot of the beats of a fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons campaign and the lovely disasters that can ensue. As the author, I very consciously designed the story this way, because some of the best stories I’ve ever experienced have been around the game table. A large part of what makes D&D work so well as a storytelling avenue is its codified rules. These define things like how magic works, what weapons can do, and even resolving complex maneuvers. As an author trying to capture the proverbial magic of a TTRPG story, I knew that I’d have to codify many of the book’s events in terms of game mechanics. Among these are three new cantrips. Each of these new cantrips for D&D was designed with the classes listed in mind.

In The Mis-Adventurers: An (Almost) Epic Tale, Thomas Edward Overdale (aka Tom), of Farshire, is an eager halfling bard determined to set out on his own, so that he can write an epic tale of legend.

Gag

Classes Bard, Cleric, Warlock, Wizard

Transmutation cantrip

Casting Time 1 action

Range 60 feet

Components S, M (a strip of cloth)

Duration Concentration, up to 1 minute

You cause a strip of fabric to constrict the mouth of a creature you can see within range. The creature must make a Strength saving throw or be unable to speak above the volume of a whisper for the spell’s duration. If the creature attempts to speak louder, its words are muffled and garbled. This does not impede verbal components for spellcasting, unless a creature must be able to hear or understand for the spell to work.

Surge

Classes Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard

Evocation cantrip

Casting Time 1 action

Range 60 feet

Components S

Duration Instantaneous

You fire a stream of water at a creature you can see within range. You can also change the temperature of the water you evoke. Make a ranged spell attack. On a hit, the creature takes 1d8 bludgeoning, cold, or fire damage (your choice when you cast this).

At Higher Levels. The spell’s damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).

Warp

Classes Bard, Sorcerer, Wizard

Conjuration cantrip

Casting Time 1 action

Range 10 feet

Components S

Duration Instantaneous

You teleport to a point you can see within range.

At Higher Levels. The spell’s range increases by 10 feet when you reach 11th level.
