Ecology of the Mage Eater – Fast and Dirty Monsters

Fast and Dirty Monsters - Ecology of the Skleee
It's Okay to Be Cliche as an RPG Player

Mage EaterSpell Casters of the worlds beware.  The Mage Eater lurks above stalking and hunting lone travelers with magical abilities.  I present to you the Fast and Dirty Monster: The Mage Eater.

Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition presents many useful creatures to use against your player characters but perhaps that is not enough.  Fast and Dirty Monsters is a series where we take a concept and convert an already created monster and give it a whole new life as a completely different monster.  In this edition we have taken the Coalt, a generally good monster and turn it into something a little more vial and monster-like.

Fast and Dirty Monster: The Mage Eater

The Mage Eater is snake-like and rough 10 to 15 feet long.  It has opalescent skin that glistens in the noonday sky.  On a bright and sunny day it blends into the sky with ease.  As a chameleon takes on the Fast and Dirty Monstersqualities of the surroundings so does the Mage Eater but for the background of the sky.

Its sole purpose of hunting its favorite meal, anyone with spell casting ability.  It feeds on the magical energies of those with magical talent.  The Mage Eater senses magic in a way unlike any other being.  As a human sees things around it a Mage Eater knows when anything around it either can use magic or posses an item imbued with magic.

A mage Eater will take items of magic and weave them into its nest and lair.  It is believed that they are either snacks when other food sources are scarce or for the raising of their young which do not have the ability to fight casters of magic because their horns have not grown in yet.

This Anti-magic serpent can flatten out and sail upon the winds enabling it to fly.  The horn which protrudes from its snout fires off a massive cone which negates any magic crossing the path of the cone.  This combined with being able to grapple a smaller humanoid makes it a devastating combatant versus most spell casters.

If this tactic was not enough The Mage Eater posses a hypnotic dance as it sails on the wind.  When a person becomes entranced into immovability it goes in for the squeeze.  As it crushes and drains the magical life essence from it prey it seeks out its gear to return it to its lair.

This creature is usually found hunting in solitary, but should you find it hunting in pairs and manage to survive consider yourself lucky as it should be rearing a young.  As the saying goes you are what you eat, Dungeons and dragonsMage Eaters are full of magical ingredients.

Mage Eater for 5th Edition

From their horns to their tails, most in between and even unhatched eggs offer up ingredients of power in spells and magic item creation.  Any item resulting in resistance to magic or even immunity tend to favor using these creatures as a base because of their nature.

Because of this nature they are immune to any magical means of locating them.  Being it spells, scrying or what have you.  If magic is involved it will produce no effect in getting you closer to one.

So there you have it the mighty Mage Eater set for your spell casters doom in Dungeons and Dragons.  Again we based ours on the Coalt found in your trusty MM.  It needs some slight modification and can descend on your party from on high to eat all those nasty spells.

What do you think, thumbs up or down?  Regardless of which way you vote remember the saying, Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy!
